Having a res with your airstone in bottom as always, no net-pot no inserts, just the res filled with your choice of hydroton, perlite, vermiculite, lavarock ect ect. and your nutes. depending on what you use for example hydroton floats, so when you fill your res you would fill untill you first start to see the hydroton lift an inch or so,airstone in bottom will still work allowing the bubbles to go up through the hydroton then to the roots. and a question,, would the hydrotom store some air and nutes ?

please give feedback

What you are talking about is a combo of Shallow water culture and ebb and flow type. The issue with this is watch what happens to the air, it goes straight up and dissipates very quickly from a small area of the surface, so the number and size of plants will be limited. This could work, but the hydrotron would get everywhere and clog things up, if you really want to make this work PM me, you have basically described my system, but its probably more like 2.5" of water, 7.5 gallons for 10 plants...... i keep details close, but if you want some info i could use testers.....

Ebb and flow is based on nature, the tray fills up for x amount of time then drains away and the media the plant is in (typically rockwool) stays wet, when it drys out you water again, all done with timers.

follow what Trueno says. I used timers and flooded for 15 minutes every 2 hours.. It was very easy and worked great. I have since moved on to an aero set up and ditched that in favor of a BC Bloombox
