Just wanted to introduce myself and get your opinions on how i made out. I was able to buy some equipment. I got a 400w HPS Light with Dimmable Ballast and a Sunshine Systems Grow Panel Pro Led 300w. I also got some nutrients, ph tester, soil ph tester and a mylar lined growing tent. I paid about 300 bucks. Seems like i did ok but im no expert.

Maybe you guys can offer some opinions. I only have space for a small grow box. 2-3 plants max. I was planning on using the LED for all the obvious reasons. What size do guys think i should make my box? Also in regards to ventilation what do i need? How many fans? What fans would you recommend on the cheap side?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That sounds like a pretty good deal man! congrats on getting started, im thinking 3x3 or 4x4 grow box? maybe smaller, depends on your liking and size limitations, you are going to need an exhaust fan and an intake if you want optimal air circulation, from my understanding you would want ur intake kind of underneath your plants to so the air can rise up through and give plants needed oxygen, and your exhaust on the top so it will suck out the used up air, you can get some pretty cheap duct fans or just a couple table fans or office fans, ducting isnt always needed but it can help, i dont have any links but i hope this helps and good luck buddy! have fun growin!

before fan questions, will the air introduced to the grow be conditioned, or outside air, and what approx temp? if your in a hot climate, fuck the fan system, you'll need air conditioning.

I believe 3ftx3ft length, width and 6ft-7ft tall is good for growing 2-3 plants. Avoid fans for they suck the water out of your system, go for air conditioning...Best of luck for your first grow.

Thanks for the replies. Most likely the air being introduced is going to be at about room temperature. Between 70-75 degrees. I wont be bringing in outside air. I live in the northeast so it's not too dry or humid.

Also I don't plan on using the HSP system. I may sell it to purchase other equipment but have no idea what it's worth. The previous owner said he used it for no more to 3-4 months. Can you guys give me a ballpark?

Thanks.

I would definitely reconsider fresh air intake,a vital part of a plants life comes from fresh circulated air.As far as the light systems worth, Condition is always going to play a part. Did you buy it with a used bulb and if so are there any hotspots showing? Here in the NW on CL you could get rid of it fairly quickly around $100-150. But this is a legal state so there is a larger demand for that equipment and an even bigger supply.

I am actually going to be using a LED light. Fresh air is tough for me because I will be growing in a house away from windows.

You will need an exhaust fan, and I would suggest a carbon filter for smell control. They you need an air for circulation within the box. I think a passive intake is better so that really should be it. I use 2 fans inside for circulation within my 2x2 grow area but I would recommend going bigger than 2x2. If you are going to build it, I would say go as big as you comfortably can, it should be easier to control your temps in a bigger room. I would hold off on selling the HPS until you have this grow going. You may find that you prefer it to the LED. And you could use the LED for veg and HPS for flower and have a perpetual grow going.

Thats my .02, I am fairly new to this. I started with an LED and swapped it out for HPS @ flowering time.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to get the dimensions straight tomorrow. I'm leaning towards 3x3 but we will see. Makes sense I guess I will hang onto the HSP for a little while. I was planning on using the LED and 2 supplemental CFL's for side lighting. Seems to me it could be overkill. It's a powerful led so I'm not sure.
