Newbie first grow (rubbermaid)

Hey everyone just recently joined the board and I just wanted to share my first grow. For my first grow I decided to go for the Rubbermaid route I doubled the bottom container for now these are the parts I used as followed

2-18gallon Rubbermaid bins with tops - 4$ each
2- Wal***t cheapo desk fans - 4$ each
1 - assorted box of wire connectors ( the twist on ones) -2.50$
2- 3 light vanity bars - 9$ each
2- small potting cups - .65¢ each
2- medium potting cups - 86¢ each
1- cheap wal***t ext. Cable -9$
2- shoe strings for height adjusting the lights - free took them off a spare pair of shoes
1- box of aluminium foil - free already had it
1- roll of scotch tape for the aluminum foil
6- 5k 23 watt cfl bulbs came in box of four- I'll update the price

Now for my intake the light fixtures came with these white circles that fit around the base of where the bulb goes I took those off of all six and cut out the intake hole the same size and forced it in so it was nice and snugg the stuck one of the two cheap 4 inch wal***t desk fan in front of the 2 inch hole to promote a suction of fresh air

And for the exhaust I cut a circle on the lid of the Rubbermaid bid to fit another 4 inch cheap wal***t fan with the fan sitting flush on lid and pulling the hot air from the box out into my apt. Planning on filtering when the time comes

Now when I sprouted my seeds I used the waterlogging method just sat them in a little dish full of water and after the 3 day the seeds had sprouted a little and the YouTube video I watched said not to keep them in the water for more than 3 to 4 days so I went ahead and planted them and at first I started with the 24 hour light phase then swapped to the 16 on 8 off because I had read that the extra 8 hours doesn't really do much for you so.....please correct me if any of my info is wrong and let me know what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it

For my potting soil I'm just using some organic indoor / outdoor potting mix and I picked up some extra perlite still need to find some food to give to them when they mature a little

And last but not least just using some regular bag seed with this being my first grow and all
And I'm sorry if some of you guys information takes a bit to set in haven't really grown anything before

I will update my pics asap

Thanks in advance

Boy! for what I know about it this all sounds pretty sketchy to me. from equipment, if you can call it that! to unknown seeds? how you gonna have a baseline? how do you suspend lighting with shoe strings? boy oh boy good luck. Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm

It will work just fine, there are many micro growers that are using cfls. Just keep the cfl's close to the plant and make sure
you keep them cool.

Some pics of the setup would help people be able to help you further.

Now when lights are on I make the adjustments to the lights as I need (which hasn't been at all since I've started growing)the black electrical tape the holes so light does not get out. The main thing I'm worried about is the light that shines through the top if anything I can double up on the tops as well because that's what I did to the bottom and no light gets through it.And again open to any suggestions

And on the very inside of the box I have another fan in place that is on the back side of the intake pulling fresh air in

Looks good, the top fan will draw fresh air in from the intake on its own (reverse pressure) so the fan inside can be used to gently cool the girls and the lights
so you can keep the lights closer. The lights will need to be within a couple inches of the plants for the
best results.

Sweet, and I forgot to mention that this is for personal smoking purposes not expecting anything crazy (hence why I used my Reggie seeds) just something that I can smoke and say wow I did a fine job growing this lol

OK so just a little bit of an update......The setup pictured above DID NOT WORK :( my box temp was unmonitered for a few days (because i didnt have time to swing by the store to purchase one). once i finally had purchased i left everything on overnight just to find out the next morning the box temp had hit over 100 degrees which i now understand why my soil was drying out overnight.... So im thankful i did not invest more than bag seed for my first experiment...Since learning from these mistakes ive ordered seed from herbie(trans siberian Auto) and they did arrive in the states safely... revamped my box a little to produce more airflow now the box sits at about 70-80 degrees... i have also invested in the good ol fox farms ocean forest soil so hopefully things this time around go much smoother and i will keep everyone posted because its been hell trying to find grow guides on the particular strain that i chose

I will post pictures of my new setup
thanks for reading

:EDIT: Also i forgot to mention i swapped from aluminum foil to a mylar emergency blanket

I learned first hand how the Rubbermaid hold onto the heat. I upgraded my fans and that pretty much saved it. Check out my grow I.am growing with cfls and my baby turned out great. I look forward to seeing what's in for you.

The rubbermaid looks like clean. I like it and i like how much space is in there.
Compared to a pc.

I wonder if it would be benefitial to grow on the side.. grow one plant more.verticle

Il keep an eye on this grow :)

you know im not quite sure but you definitely have me thinking lol.... but i will be posting pictures soon because i woke up this morning to my trans cracked open as well as my bag seed
and i plan on just doing one or two at a time because when you stack the second rubbermaid bin on top it actually sits fairly tall and where i chose a auto breed it shouldnt get much higher than 16 inches

Your gonna need to low stress train your plants by either tying them down or simply installing a scrog screen because that plant will outgrow its living conditions if nothings is done

I couldn't agree with you more. I LST'd and it's the only reason I was able to grow in the rubbermaid, which by the way looks great. Sub'd

That sucks your temps were too high, as long as you can keep it cool it will work.
There have been quite a few successful grows on here with similar setups.

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE my main plant im worried about (trans siberian auto) sprouted today :D The box is sitting at 80 degrees during the day and drops to about 70-72 degrees throughout the night i have only watered the ladies once since planting because the FFOF holds water like a champ i will keep everyone posted as the days progress here is my trans siberian so far:

And the updates to the grow box
1. added another 4 inch fan sucking heat from the lights

2. Removed aluminum foil and replaced with mylar emergency blanket

and my main question is at this point should i be running all 5k+ lights or can i keep my 2 of the 6 cfls 2700k

I run a mix spectrum. I have 2 42w running at 5000k, 2 42w at 2700k, and 2 23w at 2700k (this is for flowering) For veg I would just take the two 23w and swap from 2700 to 5k or 6500k. I seems to be beneficial, because at all times you have lights for great stem, leaf and flower. As long at the ratio is 1:3 either which way depending on where you are in the grow you will be fine. Good call in the Mylar btw.
