[Newbie] Making first grow box - need help

I am attempting to build my first ever grow box. I am no DYI expert although I know the basics and my way around basic tools. I have a few questions I am wanting elaboration on so let me tell you what I am wanting before I ask them to make things easier.

I am wanting a simple grow box, nothing fancy and the cheaper the better. I have about $500 bucks to blow although if possible I'd like to spend less than that. I am growing solely for my own, and my girlfriends, personal use, so I don't need multiple plants nor huge yields, although good yields are never bad! :)

I am thinking of going to goodwill and getting a 2-4 foot dresser or cabinet of some sort to mod into my grow box. Now I know generally what I need to do to make it functional but I am more so concerned with the "fine tuning." Although this is my first box and I will probably make a more advanced one down the line as I get more advanced; I am wanting it to be a good box to start with regardless. So here are a few questions.

1a)Lights: I know CFLs are not preferred by most "advanced" growers due to their potential to yeild less when compared to LED and T5 lighting systems. How much would LEDs and T5 systems cost compared to CFLs?

1b) What is the yield difference between these three light systems? Would going CFL not be a big issue yeild wise considering I don't need large yeilds as it is for personal, medical use?

1c) I see a lot of talk about blue and red spectrums for lights during specific stages of the plant's life. Is this speaking about full spectrum colors from the lights themselves (ie "white" lights with good color spectrums) or would you want to put in actual blue lights and red lights during the appropriate stages?

2) Fans: Can you use PC fans for ventilation and what is a good speed/power for such fans? Would I need more than 2 fans?

3) Odor Elimination: What is an easy but effective filtration system to set up? I was thinking of just cutting a hole, placing an exhaust via PVC pipe on the outside. Would I just stick a "carbon scrubber" at the end of the exhaust externally or would it be internally so that it hits the filter first then goes out the exhaust (as opposed to going through the exhaust and then hitting then filter)?

4) Hydroponic System: Should I bother with Hydroponics given this is my first grow box and grow attempt?

5) Is this really all I need: a box 2-4 feet high for 1 (possibly 2 at most) plant. A fan at the bottom blowing air in, one up top by the lights blowing air out. An exhaust/odor filtration setup. Lights and mylar?

6) Height Restriction: How do you make sure your plant wont overgrow and potentially bend/hurt itself or grow to the top and hit the lights?

7) Plant Specific: How does one actually get buds without seeds and a lot of sticks? I am not as caught up on the actual growing process quite yet so I am unsure how people get no sticks or seeds in their bud when they harvest.

Thanks you for any and all help!!!

I would use some of that $500 to get a good book on indoor cultivation. That would answer your questions and serve as a reference for questions that will come in the future.

CFL's are not good at light distribution. A T5 is basically as CFL stretched out into a tube. The tune allows for better coverage. Since, unlike CFL's, they have detached ballasts, you can wire them so that the ballast (The hottest part) is outside of the box. They also have a slimmer profile and look much, much cleaner that a power strip with 6 Y splitters attached. You can get a 2'x2' 4 lamp T5 for around $100.

Depending on the size of the box, axial fans might work to blow air around but they will not provide adequate air exchange, especially if you have restrictions like ducting or a filter on them.

I would get a 4" centrifugal inline fan and a small carbon filter. You can mount them outside the box or create a separate space for them within the box.

Spend the money on a good light fixture and good exhaust system (fan/filter) Don't try to save a buck here. This is the most critical part of obtaining a good environment.

I would grow in soil for the first time. Use a quality potting soil and a simple, complete fertilizer from a company like Jack's Classic or DynaGro. You can waste a lot of $$ buying snake oil. Don't do it.

Learn about what makes a plant grow; photosynthesis, light, respiration, transpiration, nutrients, environment, pH etc... This is where a book would come in handy. It doesnt have to be a cannabis specific book, just one that deals with plant biology.

You get no seeds by only growing female plants. Any males are removed as soon as they are noticed. Without males and their pollen, female flowers cannot be pollinated and therefore, no seeds.

You get no sticks by trimming and manicuring the buds after harvest.

Start here, it will answer some of your questions:

Very nice, thanks for the advice, a few more questions...

1) should the fan thats blowing out of the box have the filter with it?

2) I am thinking of using an AF seed on my first attempt to grow ever. Is this recommended, they seem rather beginner friendly?

3) Would keeping an AF plant on an 18/6 light cycle (on/off) the entire time work fine? I'd prefer light cycling as opposed to 24 hr lights if possible.

4) If I mounted the ballast on the top of say a dresser or cabinet (wood), would it potentially damage it due to the heat? If so, what are some good ways to manage potential heat damage on the exterior of the "box" from the ballast?

5) Do you know of any good cultuvating books? :)

18/6 is veg time, once you veg for 3-4 weeks (assuming u will need short plants ) then you flip to 12/12
i would reccomend going on ebay and getting a ufo led... they are not the best buy they cost nothing to run, no heat, and can get you some good smoke.

you will not have a ballast unless you run HPS or MH
Go to barnes and nobles, lol the one by me has a few good ones... if not go on ebay..

I just built 2 grow boxes with cfl used for light... I would say do some searching. Go on eBay and buy a 80 dollar tent 100 dollar fan and filter and a 110 dollar 400 watt hps. 300-350 invested and you'll be set for a while

Now that I've started using my boxes a friend bought that same stuff I mentioned off eBay and In 45 mins it was all together running. And cost about the same as one of the 250 watt cfl boxes I had just finished.

Not True. Assuming that AF=Autoflower then 18/6 is fine throughout the entire grow, but can very depending on your specific strain... I haven't used the UFO so i have no opinion to give on that... And the ballast which comes with HPS/MH AND the CFLS (ex t5s) will not get hot enough to burn wood unless there is something seriously wrong.
I also recommend a book or two and lots of google searching and youtube watching... You can try to start with:

Most things will come down to your own discretion, for example, if your doing this in a room that stays 60 degrees your not going to need a big fan for heat exchange.
The carbon filter usually goes on the inside. There are other options like ONA buckets that you might want to look into on a smaller grow like this...

Other then that i would have given the exact same advice as given by EastCoastEnthusiast here "...buy a 80 dollar tent 100 dollar fan and filter <combo> and a 110 dollar 400 watt hps."

Good luck

You can get a grow tent on Ebay for $80?! Damn!
