noob in need of help with carbon filter question

Ive been reading tons of info about a nice diy carbon filter to help control smell and an idea hit me that seems too good to be true seeing as how i have seen nothing about it in all my research...but would it be possible to just have like a mesh bag full of activated carbon taped over the back of a fan to control the smell? Im growing one plant in a small walk in closet that isnt air tight by any means and its a rental, so putting sketchy holes in the wall really isnt an option. Any one have any advice or suggestions?

that doesnt really help me as far as my question goes tho, im just curious if a stationary filter such as this one would do anything at all, or just be a huge waste of time.
