ok so i germinated 15 seeds they sprouted were under 24hr light (2 23w cfl and 4 4' flo) for the first 4 weeks..... havent had a chance to get big pots so they are in two liter pop bottles..... the roots are almost to the bottom so its time to make a change into bigger pots..... i recently purchased a 600w mh/ waiting for the 600 hps...... ppl say mh is the way to go but then i hear ppl; say its a waste of energy.... who knows?

I prefer HPS, but i do keep a switchable ballast and a MH bulb on hand, just in case. When used properly you can actually get more crystal covered buds when blue light is used late in flower.

hey mate, ive used both before and mh is deffinatly better for veg, but a hps will do the trick, myself i still use a mh for veg and hps for flower, but thats just my opinion. hope the grow goes well for you either way mate.

PERSONALLY, I think anything more than 16 hours of light is a waste, so I run my lights 16/8 during veg. I would run it 18/6 but I noticed my plants were getting "tired" (droopy leaves, no positive tropism, plants literally turned away from the lights) after about 16 hours of light so I thought, why give them more light than they want? That's when I switched.
There are a some die hard 24/0 people that believe 24 hrs of light is best for veg. I've never done it and plan to try it next cycle, but for now, I don't agree with it.
So asking how long you should run your lights is kind of subjective, but 18/6 is standard.
