Odor Concerns

Hey good people, just wondering about odor, my situation is a closet grow inside a grow tent with a 600watt led panel, and a 6 inch inline exhaust fan with a carbon filter attached blowing upwards inside the closet (since I have no other option) but I will be going with northern lights since I have read that it is low odor but is any cannabis really low odor when growing/flowering? Well I wanted to try for 3 plants in a 2x2.5 space inside 3 gallon smart pots. Do you think odor will be still pretty bad with this setup? Should I only grow 2? I figure if I am going to grow I might as well go for 3.. it is going to smell either way..

Yup, its going to get stinky for sure...good thing you have the carbon filter! That should be all you need to keep the stank under control. I have a 4x4 w a 6 inch inline and carbon filter...gets me through flowering without anyone smelling a thing. At least until i open the tent...then all bets are off!

So i have a similar setup with a 3ft x 3ft x 6ft grow tent, a 125mm (5in?) inline exhaust fan, and a carbon filter attached to it. Despite this, my shit still stank hard (I grew 8 plants in 1 gallon pots), especially when it came towards the end of flowering (started reeking around week 7). If someone opened the door to my room, they would definitely know I got a grow operation going on lol. I had to keep the door closed to contain the odor.

I guess I'm wondering where I went wrong here cause I shouldn't have any smell at all with a carbon filter, or at least close to none.. I've used duct tape to secure the filter to the exhaust fan, and also taped the other end of the exhaust that connects the ducting.

It was my first grow and all equipment is brand new. Did I get unlucky and get stuck with a faulty carbon filter? Is the exhaust fan not pulling air quick enough or pulling too much? Did I grow too much bud at once and the filter + exhaust couldn't handle this type of capacity?

One thing I had to do is place a ONA gel inside the end of the duct that's pointing out of the window to prevent that odor from being smelled outside. So no odor outside due to ona gel, but that odor was somehow leaking inside.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I can't link the filter nor exhaust so I'll post the specs of them :

Can-Fan RK 125mm / 310 m³
CAN Filter Lite 300 m³ / h

If the exhaust is setup right you shouldn’t smell it. I’ve had family in my house and none knew they were standing on close 50 or so plants. Negative pressure man

Carbon filter is a must. Buy a speed controller and run your inline on the lowest setting and you can have as many plants as you want in that space without smell. If you don't vent out of the closet expect slower growth as co2 diminishes.

If for some reason smell is still an issue buy a cheap carbon filter on ebay for 30 bucks and put it on the other end so you vent through 2 filters.

Three options
1. Buy a second carbon filter for the other end of exhaust
2. run the fan slower so air has more time to be in contact with the carbon
3. buy a better quality filter.

Always maintain negative pressure and make sure the filter has a higher CFM rating than the fan

I have a cheap iPower filter that works well but is only 95% effective even the fan is running on the lowest setting

Does anyone know if having a filter at both ends will affect the life of the fan? Small price to pay for peace of mind, but i use vortex s-line fans that are super quiet but also more expensive than most can fans. Even though i don't have odor issues, if it won't hurt the fan, I might consider doubling up just in case!

1 or 2 plants
Negative pressure

It’ll put extra strain on the fan. If you have proper gear it shouldn’t smell.

Negative pressure is a given anyways , but there some helpful things that can work in a pinch .

I used to work for a pest control service and had access to EARTH BAGS , which pulled the AMBIENT smells from a space ( which you really want ) not just from the cabinet or tent . It would pull musky air , dead rat , mildew , etc. it was hung from a rafter and after awhile , no smell.

There are similar ones available ... called gonzo bags . Another interesting one ( never used it but heard about it ) SMELLEZE ( used for odor control around corpses ... yes corpses. ) it supposedly doesn’t MASK or Perfume space but a natural odor control. It could be sprinkled to a small open face Tupperware piece and shoved in a corner of space or in room to pull the ambient smell .
Non toxic too.

TIP : NEVER EVER SPRAY FEBRESE OR OTHER SHIT ..... unless you like tasting shit on your buds.

One last thing about “ your “ odor .....

Wash ass
Brush teef
Put deodorant in yo pits

I think I covered it all .....*puts 10th beer down
