you can veg as long as you want. i think most people choose depending on height restrictions. plant will double to triple in size during flower. some people go 12/12 from seed. some veg for months.

my current clones only vegged for like a week, when they were about 10 inches tall i switched to 12/12. they have been flowering for 1 week and 5 days now, and they are 25 inches tall with super big leaves.

the strain im growing i guess is bred for it to be short, but i dont need it to be so i veg for 6 weeks with the light 1 inch from the plant untill the end i move the light up a little and let them stretch a few inches then put them in the flowering room

i do clones at 15 days veg hydro.... for soil from seed id say 1 month is plenty all depends on the plant and the environment ive seen newbies with a month old plant with 2 nodes on here so how tall is it and how many nodes will give an idea say 8 inches with 7 nodes id flower that ho 1 foot with 3 nodes you stink try again

whats the longest anyones vegged for
I saw a guy on here once that his plant vegging for over a year. Another guy a couple weeks ago said he keeps his plants in veg indefinately because he only smokes the leaves. older guy, he said hes been smoking since the 70's and never knew how to bud a plant. He claimed that back in the 70's when you bought a bag thats what you got.....stems and leaves. I thought the guy was seriously misinformed or kidding around but the thread went on for awhile and 4 or 5 other older guys confirmed his claims. funny shit.

For a mother plant, it can be years. Normally 4 to 6 weeks until pre-flowers show, but other factors that may influence the time (besides strain) would be if I'm doing a small closet grow - limited space, I'll go less. I like to have an inch (or less) between nodes but that can be a little harder with the sativas I've done.

I have a couple gdp clones i got about 3 weeks ago, if i want to i can just keep vegetating them until the next grow season ,right? And then have a couple of monsters.
