Organic Soil Taste vs Hydro Taste

here's a wrench for all of you, I'm smoking some jack the ripper that tastes unbelievable.
I used promix which is a soiless medium, so is it hydro?
I use jack's classic, a chemical nute
I feed up until I pull, flushing is for toilets.
It tastes great right after final trim and gets better everyday it's left to cure.
it leaves that JTR flavor on your tongue, no chemical taste.
only other thing's I used were bud candy and bloombastic for a p/k spike.

Plants do not know what they are grown in, they only care about being fed properly. Just because you grow in Soil does not mean it is better, in ANY way. Same goes for hydro or Coco. If done right hydro and Coco will out yield soil, and taste just as good. Most of the time soil tastes different because it does not flush the organics well. Just like if you do not flush salt based nutes well, it will taste more chemmy. Besides that, most "organic" growers are not truely organic. Personal preference is what it all comes down to, but if done right hydro or coco will produce more bud and taste excellent.

I've done both hydro vs. soil, organic vs. synthetic... there are definitely differences between all the variations, but I don't think it's fair to generalize. It really depends on what is in the soil and/or what nutrients you're using.

However, to this day, the best tasting herb I've ever grown (about 1.5 years ago, I still have about a half-ounce left, smokes smooth as butter) was synthetic-hydro. It wasn't as strong/rich of a flavor as I've gotten from organic soil, but it was so pure and sweet it was like sucking on custard.

Really, there's nothing wrong with the flavor of synthetic hydro, if you're using the right nutrients.

Now I grow organic soil-like (super-tea feed, and 9/10 perilite/hummus, behaves like hempy) because I like the balance of all that it provides.

Also, why do ya'll say pH up/down is not organic? Because they lack a carbon atom in their molecular structure? Shouldn't sand, dolomite lime and rocks be considered non-organic then?

^ I agree absolutely. Don't forget that N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and all other elements the plant uses for growth are all technically not organic. They have no C in them. The only difference between liquid mineral ferts and organic soil is that the micro life in the soil breaks down the organic amendments in order to get to the final inorganic nutrient form for the plant to uptake and the liquid ferts just skip this step and offer straight chelated nutrient for the plant to immediately absorb.

I feel that the biggest reason there is such a dramatically perceived difference in the community between hydro and soil is because a lot of hydro herb is over fed. Properly done chem hydro herb can taste amazing. Almost as good as organic bud. Almost. :)

people can continue debating this...

while i continue to use organic soil :), and whoever said i shouldnt call my grow organic....wtf... i put alot of effort and consideration into what i use to ensure there is no petroleum salts or synthetic chemicals anywhere near my stuff. yeah im going to start using organic coco as a change of pace soon, but still, how can you people with any experience with both not see the true superiority in taste and stone of organics?

Because not everyone has the same sense of taste and smell. I can distinguish between the raw smells and the smell of different smokes, but fuck if any taste different, all taste like burning plant matter to me, others however don't find it this way. It can be argued and argued because it's all down to nothing ut personal preference. For example i think cannabis with tobacco mixed in tastes far superior to cannabis on it's own. Everyone else will cry nooooooo, but hey, this is me and this is my perception. I've triued organics and i can't tell the difference using the same clone in a chemical DWC bucket, stone certainly didn't change from medium to medium etc.

The only time I get a taste off smoke is on the exhale, and that was on a excellent cutting of DJ short blueberry. That shit really reminded me of eating a blueberry muffin. Berry smell and taste in a big way. That being said I'm very much looking forward to harvesting and smoking these Chernobyl I have growing, When I touch a bud my fingers smell like lime slurpee. it's crazy.

There is a reason that after 40 years of growing I prefer Organic Soil.
Methods I have used in my career
Ebb And Flo
Flood and Drain
NFT
Aero Misting
Aquatics
DWC
Drip Feed

After 4 decades for me personally its all about taste.

A few years ago Jilly and I ran the Shrom cut side by side her in Hydro and me in Soil.
Her plant took over the grow room yielding a phat 11 ounces while the soil only pulled down 5. The Hydro shrom was amazingly potent and super resinous but we both agreed the soil buds tasted sweeter and had more character.

That really sums it up one is about amazing production and visual looks

The other is about taste.

Hey sub, I remember reading something you wrote about not liking Schrom because it was "angry weed" or something like that. Could you go in depth about this?

It made Jilly and I very uptight and we were quick to snap at each other while high on Shrom

My vote is organic soil all the way. I've grown both ways and find organic soil grown herb tastes and smells the best to me. I'm using Subcool's super soil recipe currently with excellent results time after time. Hydro is more work and the flavor just doesn't do it for me. Just my two cents...
