the ph will affect how the plants will absorb the nutrients. The best range for hydro is 5.5-6.5. I have used tap water, which has a high ppm, for my first couple grows and the taste is very harsh compared to using reverse osmosis water with a ppm of 3. Trust me you will want to adjust your ph and also keep an eye on your ppm.

Anything below 7 is acidic.

Anything above 7 is alkaline.

6.2 - 6.8 is pretty much where I keep mine.

ok i really need a quick answer.. been on this site an hour.. every1 has different answers for everything.. its really annoying

growing outdoors/// best ph lvl for my soil and for my water to water the plants.

im using soil that was in my woods... its dark, moist and has a rotten log near it and has worms diddling in it.. so i didnt bother buying 30000 dollar soil.. .. iso answer.. ty

I am not an expert but here is what I do...I use tap water that has sat out overnight to let the chlorine evaporate after which I add 1 tbsp epsom salt per gallon, then I lower the pH (it is 7.8 out of my tap) with vinegar until it is at 6.4. I generously water the plants until water runs out of the drain holes and then I dont touch them again for 7 days until it is time to water again. That is the way I do it and havent had any problems. I use Balck Gold soil at 13-5-10.

Raising soil pH: (to make it more alkaline) It is generally easier to make soil mixes more alkaline than it is to make them more acidic. The addition of dolomite lime, hardwood ash, bone meal, crushed marble, or crushed oyster shells will help to raise the soil pH.

Lowering soil pH: (to make it more acidic) If your soil needs to be more acidic, sawdust, composted leaves, wood chips, cottonseed meal, leaf mold and especially peat moss, will lower the soil pH.

Yes, very true, they grow anywhere. It just helps more if you do it properly. Ph'ing the soil will increase your likelyhood of getting a female plant as they prefer less acidic soil to the males. Also your yield will be better and your plant is less likely to die. Just ask some advice in your local grow shop on using the kit. You can buy digital testers which are probably the best, but you can buy tester kits for a fiver (about $7.50).
So if you buy autofems is PH'ing not required.

Hi, this is my first post. I had a problem with my first grow. The PH went down to 5.5 and I had yellow leaves etc. (I think calcium,/magnesium). Strange thing is when I used PH UP it went down to 5? Anyway I flushed the pots and then didn't water for a week. I noticed that as the soil dried the PH went up? Does moisture affect the PH? Or is it that the moisture affected the PH meter readings? I bought a much better PH tester for my next grow, currently just germinated and with 2 sets of single spiky leaves on each of my little sprouts.

Can someone answer these questions for me, specifically for a DWC setup.
1. What pH do i want my water pH level at with nutrients mixed in?
2. How often should i top up my water and nutrient mix?
3. Should i replace the water and nutrient mix every week, 2 weeks etc instead of topping up?
4. How often should I add either pH up, or pH down?
5. Where should i buy water from?
i.e should i use bottled water or should i splash out and buy R-O water from a hydro shop?
6. Can i use tap water that i have left in the sun?
6.1. How long should i leave water in the sun to remove chlorine?
7. What does the water ppm mean and how do i change its ppm?
7.1 What does the water ppm effect?

Will update with more questions i have in the near future.
