I found a PH tester for 18.00 at a web site, they say it's a soil tester. My question is: can a soil tester be used in the fert/water mix for testing. It has a needle like probe with a separate hand held meter. Has anyone used this type for testing liquid?

I think you'll have to pop for a meter that measures PH in liquid. I did the same as you did, except I was in soil at the time. I ended up buying a TriMeter. Expensive, but worth it. The type of meter wand you are referring to isn't worth it. They tend to be inaccurate or at the least vague in the readings.

One that will handle your ph readings in liquid form the entire kit should be under $25
