Application of those things are a pain in class when you just want to do them the way you were originally taught... Especially when you're only going to be off by.0000000whatever

That is true, but the concept and true application need to be understood.

For example, in terms of adding velocities, this should be expressed vividly:

(small + small) / (1 + (small/HUGE)) ~= (small + small) / 1 ~= (small + small)
