I have heard many people that use higher rated hps bulbs on there setup.

I heard of one dude that used 600w hps bulbs on a 400whps ballst for 3 years. He also tells me that when using a this type of setup you have more lumens from the same ballast...

Is this true?

I suppose it's likely true. Logically, running a 600 watt bulb in a 400 watt ballast, would force the ballast to output as much energy as possible, more than what it was designed to do. It's probably not real good for the life of the ballast, but should work, as long as the ignitor has enough juice to light the bigger bulb.

It can be done. Take it from me. I used a 600watt hps in a 400 watt ballast. I didn't see much of a difference to the eye in the brightness, but the light was much brighter when tested with a light meter. To be honest, I used that bulb/ballast setup for almost 2 years and the ballast is still going strong. Give it a shot.

i just tested it. i used a 400w hps bulb on a 250w ballast. and from what i tested the light output was better on the 250 then the 400...so i dont get it

It's probably because the 250 ballast doesn't have the power to light the bigger bulb, completely. As for the 400/600 situation described above...beats the hell outta me, I assumed it would have the same results that you had.lol

well i have heard of this numerous times. as for me. im not doing it sense after my test result......im just glade i tested for myself. Kinda weird that others had different results.
