Soft white is prolly 2700K (red)colour temp. Usually used in Flowering, What you want is 6500K (blue) for veging. These CFL's are also called Daylight. I use both spectrum CFL's all the time.

I've got 'daylight's' that're 5,500k, but still, just like sly said, u want 6,500k for veg, then 2,700k for flower. Most 'daylight' cfl's SHOULD BE 6,500k, but like i said, i've had some that were5,500k too, so look at the base of the bulb, it should say the color temp on there. Also, it's not a bad idea at all have mix in color spectrums throughout plant life.

For vegging, not that ur light wouldn't work, but it wouldn't work EFFECTIVELY. Now, that said, don't throw that light away as u can use it for flowering. Look for some 'daylight' cfl's on the bulb-base itself, and sometimes the package, it will tell u the color temp, what ur lookin for, for veggin, is 6,500k, again these are marked as 'daylight' bulbs. I'd suggest gettin 4, 6,500k's per plant to start out with. Look for the highest ACTUAL WATTS of the bulbs, not the equivelents.

Get the highest ACTUAL wattage cfl's u can. I believe 100 watters are either 23 or 27watts. They will have them marked as like 100w 'replacement' 23w 'equivelent' then make sure they are marked on the baseof the bulb or the packaging as a 6,500k daylight bulb. My lowes here doesn't sell 6,500k's for some reason, idk, but wal mart has them in 6500k. Just be sure u get the 6500k's and u should be good for veg.

so would this be bad for my plant? would it still grow?
They will be fine. The only difference is that your plant will stretch slightly more, compared to the blue cfls. Keeping the bulbs nice and close will help mitigate this (cfls should be kept close anyway).

If those are the lights there in the pictures, you're golden. From the pic's they look like the Right Colour Temp. And as you were told earlier. KEEP EM CLOSE. Like 1-2" away the entire grow. You may want to add more as you go.

Why do people believe you cant veg good with softwhite cfls(low color rating).People veg with hps all the time which has the same color rating as the (yellow)cfls. These lights will work fine. Some day i'll do a side by side and i'll bet you the lower color bulb will work better than the daylight. You will be fine using these lights for veg,my 2 cents.Stay Safe!!

I've actually done comparisons on the two- soft white and daylight cfl's. I put one of each bulb in my Y splittter on a seedling and not 2 hours afterwords, the seedling was reaching over to the 6500k, growing towards it considerably. Now as for ur side by side, ur lower temp bulb will natuarally be better in the final stages of growing, i.e. budding, but thats because of the ole color spectrum preference of the plant during certain stages, BUT for the early stages, those softy's wont do what the daylights will.
