hello to all my new family...i trust you all will be very helpful to my first grow.. i ordered some blue mystic seeds from nirvana and expecting them any day now.. i used some unknown seeds from a bag of mid i had to get sum practice in.. i built a lamp that runs 4 15w cfl's wich equals 100w(i guess, i got it off a guy on youtube build a grow light for under 30 bucks). and built a set up ghetto but nice3x4x3... just planted seeds yesterday around 2p. i got cycles down with lighting. my question is i have my lamp so low over my plant that i cant see the small pot their in... is that too low??? do they need light at this time??? plz help!!!

Lights should be about 2-4 inches away, some people say almost touching but that can cause heat stress, see plant in my avatar(grown with cfls)

Would also suggest you pick up some double sockets and add some larger watt bulbs.....around 6000K for veg and 2700K for flower. Plants always like to see light when they poke thru...just as if you'd planted outside...the seed sprouts, pokes thru, and is welcomed by the sun :)
Have fun! You will learn a lot.

Looks like the left side of the screen to me....oh you mean, "right", right? Just fooling with you, but people can easily overthink this stuff :)

The light spectrum is measured in Kelvin units, so with high intensity lighting like Metal Halide bulbs (MH) or high pressure sodium bulbs (HPS) that is one way bulbs are measured. That said, the more light you provide for early growth (veg) is in the 6500K range. The flowering time is when you would switch to bulbs around 2700K. This spectrum also applies to CFL. You can pick up double sockets and any home improvement store.

Again, many people use the veg bulbs all the way thru the life of the plant switching to a 12 hour on 12 hour off cycle to put the plants into flower. By changing the bulbs or even mixing them you should increase the yield of your plant.

Does that make sense? This is a pretty good thread to keep handy:

The 6400k Is the blue spectrum light output of the plant... If you look on the side of your bulb packets its should tell you what kelvin rating it is :) its not how many bulbs makes that kelvin its the bulb in particular :leaf:

i understand thx.. but 4 bulbs of what watt (cfl) equals 6400k

It's not the number of bulbs or anything cumulative. Each bulb will have it's own Kelvin rating on it somewhere...if not keep searching.

I have some CFL rated at 2700K and some at 6500K...each bulb stands on it's own rating. The only time you'd add anything together would be the watts so you know what you are dealing with. You can always PM me if you like.

Having reread your original post....yes you can leave the light on until it pokes thru, then go 18/6. Also the lights about 2 inches from your plant should be fine.

Now, beyond that I'd invest in a couple stronger bulbs and see if you can get them in the 6500K for veg and if you can get close to 2700K for flower you'd be better off or at least your plants would LOL. Also you can run both types of bulbs at the same time. I understand that they all can't be 2-4 inches away, but eventually the plant will be large enough to enjoy all that light :)
