sounds like over kill to put seedlings under that much lite , i would think that all youd do is burn them up! for 40 seedlings, depending on what size container u put them in u could set up a couple of cfls for the cost of running those lites for a month. just an opinion

well if you dont have cash for cfls just one 600 mh hung way high above the plants will do. one or two ten dollar 4 packs of cfl bulbs would be better for your power bill though

i've grown seedlings under my 600 with no problems. i keep the air-cooled light about 2 ft above the plants and use upside down clear plastic cups over the seedlings for the first week to retain moisture.

use the mh first

The safe bet is some soft cfls. MH could work but you could also kill em. Read some posts in Newbie Central. Tons of good info from Widow Maker and others. Good luck

For less than 15 bucks you can buy a four foot flourescent with daylight bulbs at walmart. For less than ten bucks you can buy an extension cord, temporary light socket and a 23w cfl at lowes. Or you could spent about 3 bucks for one cfl, put it in a bathroom or closet and let the seedling sprout in there.

If you REALLY have to use the 600w then make sure its at least 6' or more away from the seedlings. A humidity dome would help to refract some of that HID light away also....

with 40 seedlings you will be fine using the mh. I would just have a regular light on in the room they are germinating in until I see the first seedling sprout. Than I would take off any dome I have on them and place a few feet from the MH as they all start to pop out of the medium I would get the light closer about 2 feet away for about a week or so than get the light as close as possible after that, raising the lights or lowering the plants as they grow. Than for flowering I would use the HPS.

Just watch the seedlings close when they are young and make sure they don't dry out and die if in small pots.
