I was smoking last night outside. i wake up this morning and i go downstairs, pass the front window at 9:30am and see a cop sitting out there. didn't think too much about it and then a couple of minutes later, he rings my doorbell twice and then leaves. i easily see my neighbors calling this in to the police last night. how long do police usually persue complaints like "i think my neighbor is smoking weed." this is the first time police have ever come out to my house and from now on i'll be smoking inside

As long as you got nothing inside to worry about
Dont worry about it
and dont open the door, if they want to get in and have a reason they can get a warrant

I agree, dont open the door. THey aren't there to give you a reward, a prize, or anything you would want, they are only there to fuck with someone if they can find someone to fuck with. Dont put yourself in their path, leave the door shut.

If you must find out why they are there, then yell through the door and ask them what they want. If they refuse to tell you, tell them to have a nice day and just ignore them til they go away.

I talked to them thru a locked screen door
Then told him to get off my porch if he wasnt going to arrest me

Ya, some reasons they may be able to enter without a warrant are 911 calls and clear sign of distress. Now the latter can be interpreted different ways... and "911" calls can be placed by anyone...

I once lived under my dealer, in a small 5 apt complex with my girl at the time.
We were "busy" in the bedroom for a while, no where near any phones.

We come out, take the weed out and start burning some bong hits (she's a mom and was a school teacher at the time but son was at the father's place for the weekend)
All the while not knowing the cops are outside the door (they've been knocking but we couldn't hear from the room) - And they knock yet again.

She goes to the window and looks, panics thinking it's about her son - opens the door and stands in the doorway.
They just push her aside, three cops walk in - half Oz and bong on the coffee table, fresh smoke in the air, kids toys still everywhere... Did NOT look good...

"There was a 911 ca- Hey I smell weed!", Were the first words outta the first cops mouth...

AND evidently if they can see a bong or paraphernalia out in plain sight they can see through your window or the ajar door, then I think they can do something about that too. Not just that, but also the smell...

SnakeByte, my brother you got it up the ass without the KY. Even with a clear sign of distress as in seeing blood on the floor they still have to have a warrant if there are not broken doors or windows that were used in the entry for the crime. Once inside any thing in plain sight is fair game, including the weed and all the accessories. Plus your GF opened the door and let them in. Please if you remember noting else form this remember these words "No, Officer, I do not consent to a warrantless search." They key is be polite and respectful and make them go get the damn warrant. Now, understand this: the officer has to now go find a magistrate, depending on the time of night, wake him up, explain why he needs this and convince some crotchety old prick judge to sign the warrant. My point is that if you find yourself in that situation you have to be respectful but also the officer has to convince the judge to consent to the arrest. Not always that easy, so make them work for it if you have to.
And also keep in mind that these are also area for the cops to make mistakes whereby you can get released on a technical. So don't be stupid and loose your cool be observant and watch and remember for later. It could help you.

Well apparently (According to them and also on the phone bill) there was a 911 call placed from inside our apt... I dunno how the fuck they pulled that off but I imagine that they are in on it the the phone company or something.
