Potting Soil Vs. Aquarium Water?

Okay, let me explain what I am talking about. I'm sure I'm not the only one to make this observation...

In the aquarium hobby, the smaller your aquarium is, the more difficult it is to keep your water quality within acceptable parameters. So, as an example, if you have a 5 gallon aquarium and start to have a problem (nitrite or nitrate buildup) then your water quality suffers quickly and your parameters swing wildly. However, if the aquarium is say 400 gallons, then it's much more forgiving due to the large volume of water and your water parameters fluctuate very slowly lending you time to make a correction...

In keeping with the above example, is a bigger volume of soil, when using containers, smart pots, etc. more forgiving than a smaller volume of soil. Are you better able to manage your soil condition and parameters when it's a 100 gallons of soil vs. 1 gallon of soil? A 1 gallon container will limit the size of the plant and the plant's root ball will fill the container and deplete the soil. In a 100 gallon smart pot, the root ball will be much bigger and the plant has the potential to grow much larger, even huge. So is more soil better and easier to manage, or will the plant only get larger and create an equal demand on the soil vs. the demand a smaller plant puts on a 1 gallon pot?
