lol. guys I need to take a pic I have a 24000 btu window ac unit installed and put a cardboard box on the back of the unit and hooked up 2 pieces of ducting . and the heat from the back goes out the window . and the ac unit is on a angle so the water will drip out of the back bottom into the drain . works very well ! for get spending 1500 or 2000 or more on a mini split . when you can send 450 or 600 on a name brand window ac

Careful though, once they know what you're doing many will try and bend you over thinking you're loaded or don't have options.

I have a question for you. Is it ok to ask in this thread? I have a photo to go with my question and it involves exhausting into the chimney in the basement.

Let me know if youre cool with that and I'll fire a question.

How much air were you planning on venting out ? And do you have a plan to bring air back into the basement ? You do not want to create a negative pressure in a basement .

will exhausting into the chimney possibly create a backdraft and/or work against the existing exhaust from the furnace or a hot water heater using the same chimney?

I have 4 1000's total that are on two separate duct runs using separate 435 CFM 6 inch inline fans. The ducts pull air from the portholes I have cut out in a window and pushes it through 2 reflectors each duct run, then out of the room and I would be plugging into the chimney after that somehow instead of exhausting into the ambient basement air. As of yet, I don't exactly have a plan to replace the basement air but I was under the assumption I wouldn't need to since the exhausts are pulling air from the outside, it would be sealed aside from the small cracks and holes in the reflectors and duct work.

I also plan on hooking a 14KBTU portable A/C both inside and outside of the room. One is already installed inside the room (as of right now it is both intaking and exhausting air from and back into the basement just outside of the room) and I would hook the other up on the outside of the room for the purpose of keeping my work area cool while working in the basement. Obviously, I need to get the portable A/C ducting sealed and pulling/pushing air from/to the outside of the house.

I hope this makes enough sense to give me some ideas. I was going to just pick up a couple carbon monoxide detectors and set them up near the furnace and water heater and just see what works through trial and error. If the information I have provided is not enough, I would be happy to take some photos and draw up some diagrams with MSPaint. Thanks for your response :)

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what your doing . Need to know

Questions , are the furnace and water heater both gas and both using the chimney as a flue ?
How many basement windows do you have that are close to the equipment you want to vent ?
Do you have any desire to use the heat from the lights to heat your home during the cool months ? ( Your talking 12 to 14 K BTU/hr )
The portable A/C’s condenser will either have an intake on each side and an exhaust in the back or both the intake and exhaust on the back , which do you have ?

Just remember portable A/C's have the wost efficiency. I could barely keep temps under 80 in my veg room with a 9k portable unit cooling one 1k bulb and a small dehuy. I bit the bullet and bought a mini split and watched plant health go up and power bills fall.

If the question is should I use a portable A/C or a mini split ? Then for sure use the mini split . But if a person is on a budget and already has a 14 K portable then there are other options , I just noticed something else the thread was started by hockey 4848 to drum up extra work and I should probably NOT have even posted what I did ( Sorry ) I only posted because I was worried that someone might do something that might be deadly .
