Prune fan leaves or leave them in veg.?

Me and my neighbor argue wether or not to trim back the fan leaves during veg. I say it better too trim em back so the light goes to the branches and the branches get more energy. He thinks the opposite. Any insight?

Don't trim them, would you go pulling leaves of your tomato plant in hopes it will make more tomatoes? The plants need leaves to generate new growth.

Branches are there to transport nutes, water and support leaves/flowers.
Leaves have duties as do roots and flowers. I try to leave them all attached.
However this should get ugly fast as opinions vary. Either way i love leaves

That would make since in budding but what about when there are no tomatoes ?

Don't trim them! Fan leaves absorb lots of light and only the leaves do that not the branches so I would advise against trimming them unless you want to slow down growth and get a lower yield.

If there are no tomatoes then you got bigger problems than a couple of leaves. Just read a basic book on botany and you will know that your neighbor is right.

its up to the grower i think... i grow vertically bare bulb with a wall of weed and i clip some of mine off occasionally. if i grew horizontal i wouldnt trim at all.

I'm growing vertical also. The problem with that is I ended up with this massive bush and none of the light can even get to the branches . And the leaves start looking light def. that's mainly why I started cutting em and it also seems as if the branches grown longer faster too I did however notice it did not grow as tall as my others

light doesn't need to get to the branches. The only advantage of trimming them is, better airflow underneath, and trimming fan leaves that block bud leaves and buds. So IMO you really shouldn't trim anything until you have to.

Never grown vertical.
Leaves store nutes and shit too so sometimes the plant will pull from old leaves if you don't keep up on your regimen.....I prefer this bit of a buffer..... trim them off just before they're about to shrivel and fall of any how this seems to make em happy.

The leafs are how the branches absorb light. If you cut off the leafs more light might hit the branches but they won't absorb it. Now if DEAD leafs are getting in the way of live leafs getting light, by all means remove them. But cutting off green leafs will very rarely, if ever, allow your plant to absorb more light.

Keep in mind the plant doesn't waste any energy growing leaves it doesn't need.
If the plant didn't need it, it wouldn't grow it.

Good Luck on Your Grow.
