Purkles 1st 400w MH/HPS Grow - Blue Cheese, White Widow, Great White Shark

Did a foliar feeding on monday morning (dark cycle) and then watered today. There still seems to have been zero spread of the yellowing and necrosis since the flush and transplantation, which is a bit of a relief. I also decided to go ahead and move forward with the LST, and have done the first bend on all of my plants.

Still no yellowing a week later. I watered with a full dose of Fox Farms big bloom and grow big this morning.

Growth seems to have increased dramatically since the transplantation after a lull--I'm assuming that means that roots are establishing themselves in the new pots nicely.

Since I began LST, one of the plants (I have now lost track of what is what, unfortunately) seems to have really, really taken off. It has grown at least 2 inches in three days on the main cola and seems to have almost tripled in thickness in a week--I'm having to tie down new growth every other day. Finally my growth seems "normal", at least on this one.

Still, I'm disappointed that my plants are still quite small for almost 7 weeks from seed--I expect I'm at least 2 more weeks from showing sexual maturity, but with the new vigorous growth, perhaps I'm wrong on that.

I think I know all of my causes for stunted growth, which leaves me a lot of room for improvement on the next go-around.
First: I left the plants in the float and grow tray too long. They had roots coming out of the bottom that were nearly a foot long, though the plants were still barely seedlings. The structure of the float and grow tray also means that those roots were being exposed to light, which is also bad. Once the seeds popped their helmet, I needed to move them into solo cups.

Second: I planted directly into light warrior after the grow tray and didn't add any nutrients for a couple of weeks. Growth was slow and they started showing signs of deficiency, which brings me to my next problem:

Third: Instead of just hitting the plants with nutrients, I panicked and replanted into ocean forest. When I did this, I broke apart the rootball so I could put it in different soil. I also probably exposed the roots to light for too long.

Fourth: I should have recognized that, if the rootball was already that developed, that it could have been moved up into a larger pot, instead, I left them in the solo cup for another two weeks. Luckily, while they were slightly rootbound, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Fifth: I should have used a clear solo cup. Then I could have seen the root system and judged based on that.

Sixth: I started with RO bottled water, but moved to tap water a little after when I moved to Solo cups. I always made sure to air the water out, but I didn't get my PH meter until a couple weeks after that. My tap water had a PH of 8 to 8.5. Now I use PH down and get it to around 6.5-6.8 (I always adjust after I add nutrients).

I should probably be a week or two into flowering already, but oh well--it's a learning process.

Every day I check on them I'm more and more surprised at the growth since LST and repotting. One of the plants has almost completely covered the 4.5g square bucket and now the others are growing just as vigorously, so I expect the same thing within a few days on them. On the biggest plant, some of the lower nodes are growing multiple inches per day, and the main node is probably growing at least an inch per day. I'm probably well past a foot tall now sans LST, which means I could hit the magic 18" mark relatively soon. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm hoping for alternating nodes next week... On another note, they are really starting to smell. Two of them smell a bit more fragrant, clean and spicy, and one smells particularly thick and savory like skunky hummus or something. Unfortunately, (as previously mentioned) I no longer have any idea what is the White Widow/Big Bud, Blue Cheese, and Great White Shark/Mazar.

Light penetrating the medium is not a good idea. While it might not stunt or inhibit root growth, it will certainly just invite algae to grow in the damp soil. Good grow thus far man, can't wait to see more.

Thanks!

Clear solo inside a read solo cup with lined up drainage spots--then I could lift the clear one out for a quick peek using my green headlamp?

Alternating nodes on two of the three! One has alternating nodes on the main cola, the other has alternating in a few spots, but not on the main cola. The third and biggest plant has thus far shown no alternating nodes.

I think I'm doing LST slightly different than I've seen around here, so I'll try to get pictures
.
Essentially, I drilled a bunch of holes about 1/2" above the soil line all around the pots (About a dozen per side). Then, I put two screws on each side to serve as something to tie on to. Its common that I'll have 3-4 branches in a row that I want to tie down, so I'll wrap some string around a screw, thread it through an appropriate hole, run it over the branches, and out the whatever hole keeps the string perpendicular to all the branches I want pulled down. Then I pull until taught until the branches are at an appropriate height, then wrap it on the nearest screw a few times.

If I need to just pull one branch in a specific direction, I just put the string around it, pull both ends through the appropriate hole and wrap them around a screw.

If I rub the leaves on one of the plants between my thumb and finger, and then smell my finger... it smells like mesquite barbecue. Weird.

As of this morning I have alternating nodes on all 3 plants. I'm just trying to decide if I want to give the plants some more time to fill out even more, or if I want to get the show on the road, flip the switch to 12/12, and get my first full grow under my belt before something else could go wrong.

I decided to flip the switch seems how I had some tent maintenance to do anyway, so it was a good time to swap the bulb out. I decided to try the "24 hours of darkness" that many have suggested prior to putting them into flower lighting. As of a few hours ago, the HPS kicked on for the first time and I'm now in 12/12. I excited for the heavy growth that should be in store.

Everything was going pretty good but I've developed a few problems. One of the plants is going gangbusters, but all three have started getting some yellow fan leaves. Additionally, the third (previously the largest) plant seems to be severely stressed. It's extremely limp and I'm starting to wonder if it's going to make it.

Here are some pics of the plants in their current state. A couple of the photos really show how limp the one plant has gone:

In regards to Drew: I'll get some pics of the actual LST tonight if I can. The plants are large enough that it might be difficult to see what is going on. I might make a diagram to go with it to make it a bit easier.

Update: I think the wilting is due to under-watering. I'd been sticking my finger in 3-4 inches and if it felt "humid" when I pulled it out, I thought it was moist. I stuck my entire fist down the side of the pot about 3/4 to the bottom, pulled up a handful and it slid through my fingers like dry sand. I watered and am hoping to see recovery!

After watering, the fan leafs on the droopy plant are already supporting their own weight again (within 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours). It's a huge difference. I'm so glad that it wasn't over watered and/or root rot. Additionally, I think its definitely a girl. Will keep an eye on it.

Picture uploads didn't work last time, but I'm trying again.

Here's the tent (these are about a week old, everything is considerably bigger now)

And finally, one of the plants (The one with the frostiest buds, unfortunately) is developing a major problem. Here are photos from a week ago, but the problem is much worse now (I'm thinking PH problem or nute burn... odd that the others didn't have the same problem, though):

Hey everyone! It's been a long time and I had a lot of errors along the way, but I harvested the first plant today. I'm said to say I'm not sure what is what, but this isn't the biggest one (The biggest plant is at least twice as big. Maybe more). The third plant is the smallest and isn't ready yet, either.

My wet weight is just a hair over 7oz after trimming. I'm hoping it'll be close to 2 oz once it's dried. It was an impressive basket full of bud and I've got it hanging and drying now. Considering how many times I screwed up and how many major problems I ran into with PH, I'm very happy.

Here's a hint: When you get your PH meter and you calibrate it, test it on milk. It should be about 6.8. In my case, it read 7.4, so it was WAY off. I found this out too late and a lot of damage had already been done. From then on out after I flushed, when I watered (soil) I tried to get it to read about 7.2-7.3. The plants started recovering immediately.

I think it'll be another 2 weeks or so before the big plant is ready. It's already been 10 or 11 weeks since I started flowering.

Everything is harvested!
The first (7oz wet) batch came out to 1.65 oz dried

I harvested and I'm drying the other two plants now. The biggest plant yielded 13.6 oz WET, the other yielded 8.15 oz WET.

So, two of my plants smell fairly similar (spicy/skunky), and the third plant smells WAY different. It is very, very sweet smelling.

What do you guys think the sweet smelling one is? The BlueCheese, perhaps?
