Quantum Boards..why cant you buy them allready made up ?

Because many of the old LED's were lucky to match HID in efficiency, but with too low Wattage to be useful.

I'd buy 6 4ft double row Samsungs and a 600W driver for a very simple build. You'd be in $300 + cost of driver.


What would one use for a heatsink going that route?

True, that's what people are saying. I guess only difference is the led would run cooler. I guess those are my best options for that price range.
Yeah no bulb changes and less watts for same light. If your in a cold climate CMH might be better or a 320w led kit you want your temps to be like 80f with the led.

Your saying no bulb changes but would the led ever die out over the years or maybe it might have a bad diode or get weaker over the years and you have to buy a totally new syestem. With the ceramic MH bulb adleast you know it's just the one bulb that needs to be replaced am I wrong ?

Led should last you 10 years or more if running every day all year flowering cycle

people tried quantum boards 9 or 10 years ago, and they didn't go over, because the available leds at the time weren't nearly efficient enough, or powerful enough. someone resurrected the idea with new hardware about 2 years ago, and they've been gaining a lot of popularity since then, but now they have more competition, cobs are a real deal now, and strips are very popular as well, so new makers have a lot more options to pick from, as well as new purchasers. wait a little longer and nearly all of the major manufacturers (and knock off artists) will have a wide array of premade units available.

you are partially wrong. i and many other people are perfectly able to replace one led if it dims or burns out. if you aren't comfortable using a rework gun, then yeah, you'd have to replace or repair the whole unit.
however, you can't just stick any led in an array to replace one, it has to have the same resistance and forward voltage

You could cheat and calculate a resistor to solder into the spot, but it is not a big deal...
Tell you how I know.... I knocked one of my Samsung LEDs with the screwdriver and killed the diode.
Yeah yeah (I was recovering from getting my hand in the table saw). The strip has been working no problem next to two other strips on the same driver.
When you get to so many LEDs, the variance from diode to diode is enough to not be a dealbreaker if one gets knocked out.

Look at the bottom of the top row.

Would the 550 really cover a 5x5? I know my 600 kits won't light up the edges very well but it is a different heatsink.
I'm thought that's what they used to state, but perhaps they changed it or perhaps I just confused it with the statement "1000w hps replacement"

I only run the 260w kits so couldn't be sure enough to stake my soul on it.

I think the overall output matches a SE hps I would just be worried about the edges getting enough light

PMSL... Ops better off starting with hps to give themselves a few weeks to figure out all these bs low wattage diode claims that are flying about the thread!

I am in the same boat myself, looking for a diy set up that 100% covers a 5x5.
please keep me informed and i will return my info to you....im taking my time now on buying anything for my 5x5..initially i rushed in and made a lot of bad decisions and bought a lot of trash in a hurry to get started ( im new ) so , now coming to UK summertime i will be reading and doing more research then come lare august / sept hopefully i will be in a much better well informed position to start.

hi and thanks but .......you say i can buy QB diy kit for approx $300 then need buy a driver, well i have checked a few places and this is all that i have come up with to suit my 5x5 ....its cost is £515.00 ...so guys will this do me in a 5x5 ?

No, I was talking about the 4 foot Samsung strips.

Each strip carries exactly the same number of the same diodes as the HLG quantum boards.

I prefer the strip layout to the squares., I got mine from Digikey.
