Question about bulb and light ratings

I'm going to be upgrading from a 150w hps soon and had a few questions. I just needed to know if it was possible to use a 400w bulb in a ballast rated for 430w? Also, if anyone could suggest possible venting solutions and temperature control for a closet in an apartment where I don't have access to a vent and can't cut holes in the wall, I'd really appreciate it.

Not sure on the 400 in a 430. personaly i wouldn't do it...............
The closets a hard one hmm....well, if you don't have a problem with people finding your plant try taking the door off the hing and make A wall/door with some plastic that way you can cut all the holes you need.

Thanks for the reply man. I only ask about the bulbs because the 400w blue spectrum bulbs seem to be more common, and a bit cheaper.

That closet idea would work, but my place being a rental wouldn't allow for such modification. My fault though, I should have described my area better. It's a large mirrored rolling closet door. I've just been growing in the closet away from the clothes, not in a cab or anything. Speaking of which, I was thinking that if I were to invest in some sort of cabinet, it would provide better security, and I could just vent into another area, or even out the other side of the closet. Ideally though, I'd rather not have to buy a cabinet on top of all this other stuff.

yes my 600hps works in my 400 ballest, when i hooked it up by acc, for a full week.
if its rated 430, anything under will be ok.

You can run the 400 watt in that setup and they make actual 430 watt bulbs which have more lumnes and a mixed enhanced color spectrum for better yield and thicker plants

I'm germinating 3 seeds now. Two have popped and are in jiffy pellets to sprout, and I'm still waiting on the other. The space is about 3 x 4.25 x 5.5 as is, would it be possible to shove any more plants in there? I plan on topping and tying down, and possibly cloning the tops to hopefully get a sort of perpetual harvest thing going on.

Also, I've come across a 4" vortex fan on ebay, and was wondering if it'd be suitable for my space?: 4" Vortex Centrifugal Inline Exhaust Fan Duct Blower - eBay (item 150219579794 end time Feb-29-08 18:03:20 PST)

Thanks very much for all the help everyone

If you take the door of the hing you can put it back when your done and no one would be the wiser. or you can make a room inside of your closet with fans and the whole deal. and open the door when your home to let fresh air in. If that doesn't work i don't really see any other option for ya
