Question about carbon filters?

If I have a small rubbermaid growbox, and I have active outtake and passive intake, can I just tape a piece of carbon filter over the fan? Most DIY carbon scrubbers consist of a cylinder of screen on top of the fan, with a carbon filter wrapper around the cylinder. If I just want to wrap the top side of my fan in carbon filter, so that all the air that comes out will be pushed through the carbon filter, will that work?

I ask because I am having trouble applying my carbon filter. Whenever I put it on top of my fan, the air doesn't get pushed through effectively, and there is too much heat buildup. How can I use a carbon scrubber and at the same time, not have too much heat buildup.

PS my fan is 120 cfm, which is a TON for my tiny little box, so I don't think it would even be possible to get a stronger fan. The fan sounds like a jet engine when it's on full.
