Quick question about HID lighting.

Well to keep this short I was going to go with a 600 watt MH/HPS system. however all I really need is a HPS. I found a few 1000 watt setups for around $175 or so. But they are magnetic instead of digital. Keep in mind that this a an entire setup. Ballast, bulb, hood, hanger, and a timer. Would this be worth getting over a 600 watt digital as I do not need the MH. But would purchase a 600 later down the road once I finish what I am doing now. The area I am in now is roughly 8 x 12 but I am not using the entire room.

What do you guys think about magnetic ballast if not using MH lamps?

Worth picking up for 175?

I dunno if you've used mag ballasts before but they don't half get hot, I mean really hot, first time i plugged in a 600 left it on my bedroom floor (idiot I know!) and it burnt like a 2' round hole in my floor so it needs to be outside your grow space on a non flammable surface or wall mounted.

Also noisy fuckers.

Digital ballasts are therefore quite a bit more energy efficient as they aren't wasting so much to heat or sound.

Oh and the mag ballasts are much heavier too, why can't you get a digi 1000?

I would go with the 1000w mag or 2 600w digi's would be ideal, better coverage and much better efficiency what with both the bulbs and the ballasts being more efficient.

Thanks for the reply.. It may be a win win then for me in all reality. I am. Growing it my attic and its winter. Outside room temp , is roughly 40 to 50 degree. The extra heat may not be a bad thing. Could use the ballast instead of a small heater to help heat the exterior of the grow room. Kind of like a duel purpose light system. Heat and light.
And no I have never used a mag ballast. Just seen one for almost half the price of a digital. I set a budget for this new room and that only allowed me to get a 600 watt lamp digital. But the mag would still fit in the budget and allow for a bigger foot print over the 600. That is why I asked. Because I wasn't sure on them. And never used one. But it would only be used for the winter month and then I would have to go digital. Which my.plan is to buy anther light system anyways. And I do not need the capability of the MH lamp. As I am only growing and breeding autos.

The whole thing was the price. 175 for a whole 1000 watt setup. Comapred to almost 300 for a 1000 digital setup.

That's all I was thinking about.

So

Pros: 1. 1000 watt instead of 600 watts
2. Extra heat for the winter instead. of a heater.
3. $175 compared to almost $300

Cons: 1. Noisey
2. Maybe to hot to use during summer months
3. Not capable of running a MH lamp. However I don't really need MH

3 to 3

Lol

Ya that just might. I have been all over amazon and didn't see that one before.
Emm. That just may do it.

Then I would have the possibility of MH if needed in the future.

Thanks man. I'll check it out a little closer once I get on my comp when I get home.

So could you veg with a 400w and switch to 1000w in flowering? Would that be a good idea? I know this is random I'm sorry..
