quick questions about a thousand watt light

1: how much canopy area can a single thousand watt hood (standard air cooled) cover?

2: how far from the canopy should the light be, optimally? if you pull the light farther away, im sure you get more coverage, but less lumens?

ok these are lead-ins to a few other questions i have, so any input is appreciated.

I have a Magnum XXX hood and my 1000 covers a 5.5' x 5.5' area. I keep it 18" - 24" above my plants.

awesome info... thanks for that. i have 2 thousands that are ducted together, and they are 4 feet apart. i went out and taped 10 feet by 5.5 feet off on the floor, and arranged the few plants i have in a fashion where i could see how many i could fit in a row. i should be able to get 32 plants in there, provided that they are the same size as the ones i have now. i started flowering these at 22 inches, and theyre 40 inches now :o. quite the stretch. i think after this run (room will be full to the max in a week) i am going to try to get scroggy with it. ive heard it increases yields quite a bit.

kinda using this thread to think out loud... help me out and shout some hollars.

sorry to tell u but 2000 watts wont be enough for 36 plants 4by4 is best for 1000 watts i have 13 under 2000 watts and it aint enough i need at least one more 1000 watt

youre doing something wrong. i have only one of the thousands on right now, and 8 of these plants that i described are under it. i can fit another eight, easy. i dont see why i cant fit exactly what the numbers are telling me in there. is there something im not taking into consideration?

Interesting, I'll drop mine a little and see. Never even tried to get them closer. I have a fan blowing right over their tops. How cranked is your inline duct fan? I have a 6" fan but only run it at about 45% or so. It's way too loud at full bore.

naw, man.. i think hes directing at me, and trolling and spamming all over where im trying to get some legit info. i smoked a little, and im more chill about it now.

i know that the closer the light to the tops, the better, but the farther you pull it up, the more surface area you have, ya know? im trying to find the best possible formula... i guess its gonna take trial and error. the plants that are out there now have the light about a foot off of them, but to achieve the 5.5x10 canopy, im gonna have to raise it up at least 6 inches. i just want to know how this is going to affect my outcome. is it better to have a 4.5x8 area with the light a little closer? will the yield be the same?

Yeah I see where you are coming from. There has to be an optimal distance that provides the best of both worlds. Lumins and Surface area. Maybe that it why I have read 18 - 24". I have to think that these vented hoods allow us to get much closer to our plants than non-cooled hoods.

Check this out. Guy by the name of Useless makes some points. Seems like one could damage the buds without burning them by having the 1000 too close.

I hear a 1000 watt has a penetration of about 5 feet, so that would be about my maximum. I would think if you were gonna go any bigger than that a good rotation of plants or a light mover would help you from getting some plants that get far less intensity for extended periods of time.
