re-using growing medium. what could go wrong?

I am using "pro-mix" which is basically Peat Moss, and some Perlite. I am using chemical based nutrients and PH down. I was just about to throw out the used stuff, and I'm looking at it wondering why I can't just use it over again.

Anyone with experience have an answer?

If you're goin to use it, I'd flush it first, for a fresh start. Then, I doubt it'll give you any problems.

coco is really good to resuse not sure about peatmoss i think it breaks down alot quicker, i would never reuse anything without flushing it first with a propper flush solution. never reuse soil IMO its just not worth the chance of carrying pathogens even if your plant was healthy

^Same here. But, I have to admit that my main reason is,...laziness. I'd rather just buy an extra bag or two, than fuck around, trying to reclaim my old stuff.lol Pathogens don't concern me very much.

thanks for the replies. yeah number 1 concern for me would be any molds that may have started, spider mite eggs???, etc. It looks good to me, so I'm going to re-use some of it. Just straight to new flowering plants, not vegging plants. I'll always use new to start the vegging plants.

living in an apartment with one big dumpster out back, its just a little sketchy dumping the old stuff out, and trying to not be seen bringing the new stuff in. Hopefully I'll be alright.

I don't even think flushing should be an issue since I didn't use any nutrients for the last 2 weeks. Or am I wrong. Is there another reason to "flush".

If so, what do you recommend? Can I just run water through the stuff several times? or is there more to it?

thanks for the help.

I recycle my soil - goes through my composter along with green and brown materials as they become available. A rich dark humus full of good bacteria comes out the bottom which I refresh with manures and lime. BETTER than anything I can buy.

sounds like the ideal way to do it spanishfly. i'd like to go fully organic eventually, and if i didn't live in an apartment i'd have more options.
