Clearly most can make ends meet, maybe without much surplus but the numbers say they can (though certainly the lower third of wage earners are hurting and more). So, there is a difference between perception and reality in terms of how people feel about their prospects and their prosperity.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but I can't help but wonder what's driving so much negativity about our economy. It's not the economy.

have you never listened to any republicans speak? That's a MAJOR talking point, how fucking horrible the economy is under democrats in general and Biden in particular. They hammer it into the fucking ground every chance they get, even though it's complete and total bullshit, with republicans having a fucking shit record of financial responsibility. They keep it RIGHT in the fucking magats faces, and what are the poor deplorable cunts to do? NOT believe the cultist they've invested their entire identities in? They have NOTHING else to cling to, even though their lives are demonstrably better under democrats, just like everyone else's.

I have blind spots, what can I say? I have zero understanding how people can believe something that the facts demonstrate the opposite. I have to memorize it. As in, "MAGA believe (insert Trump lie here). How do they remember all of them? He lied 35,000 times when prez and thousands more times since. It's not that I have never talked to a MAGA it's just that I can't keep their mythology straight. Icelandic sagas are easier to keep straight.

It's funny AND disturbing at the same time. Individually, they're laughable idiots, so obviously lost and unable to figure out the simplest things...But as a group, they become a mob capable of mayhem and physical violence, who enforce each others bigotry and prejudices...

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) took aim Monday at former President Trump’s Supreme Court picks, vowing to “do better” than his 2024 rival in picking justices.

Conservative radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt asked DeSantis if he would pledge to Republican primary voters that his judges would be like the “three home runs” that Trump nominated to the high court.

“Well, actually, I would say we’ll do better than that,” DeSantis responded.

“I mean, I respect the three appointees he did, but none of those three are at the same level of Justices [Clarence] Thomas and Justice [Samuel] Alito,” DeSantis continued. “I think they are the gold standard, and so my justices will be along the lines of a Sam Alito and a Clarence Thomas.”

Trump’s three nominees — Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — delivered a 6-3 conservative majority at the Supreme Court that has enabled a number of conservative legal victories, including overturning Roe v. Wade as well as expanding gun and religious rights.
But the court doesn’t always show a straight conservative-liberal split in its politically charged cases.

On Thursday, Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s liberals in striking down Alabama’s Republican-drawn congressional map, upholding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in its current form.

DeSantis for weeks has touted the records of Alito and Thomas, two of the court’s most conservative justices, who joined the bench prior to Trump’s presidency, while notably steering clear of highlighting Trump’s nominees.

Just prior to announcing his campaign, DeSantis envisioned expanding the conservative majority even further, publicly touting how he could shape a 7-2 court if elected to two terms as president.

“And in Florida, I inherited a very liberal state supreme court, maybe the most liberal in the country, very activist,” DeSantis told Hewitt on Monday.
“But I was able to replace three of the four liberals my first month in office with conservative justices,” he added. “I’ve since been able to make a number of appointments since then. So we now have the most conservative state supreme court in the country. And so I think we have a really good track record on doing that.”

Ohio’s top court rules parts of ballot measure at center of abortion fight must be rewritten
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled on Monday that a ballot measure at the center of an abortion fight in the state needed to be partially rewritten ahead of an August election, but ruled against Democratic litigants on some of their key requests.

Ohioans will be heading to the polls on Aug. 8 to weigh in on a proposed constitutional amendment that would, if passed, require at least 60 percent of voters to pass any amendment to the state’s constitution – up from a simple majority.

The constitutional amendment would also require signatures from at least 5 percent of voters in all 88 counties, instead of the current 44 counties, with that percentage based on the gubernatorial election’s turnout. A cure period, where additional signatures could be collected should petitioners fall short of the necessary number, would also be eliminated.

The state’s high court ruled in a 4-3 decision that the text of the proposed constitutional amendment needed to incorporate accurate language about the number of signatures needed on a petition for amending the state’s constitution.

“Under the proposed amendment, the number of electors of a county who must sign a petition would be determined based on the total number of votes cast for governor in the last preceding gubernatorial election,” the court wrote.

“Because not all electors vote in a gubernatorial election, the ballot language here overstates the number of signatures that would be needed to qualify an initiative petition for the ballot,” it added.

The high court also ordered the title of the ballot measure, called “Elevating the Standards to Qualify For and to Pass Any Constitutional Amendment,” to be slightly tweaked given that this ballot initiative would only pertain to civilian-led constitutional amendment proposals.
The lawsuit, which was filed by Democratic law firm Elias Law Group, however also argued that the proposed constitutional amendment needed to “fully and accurately describe the status quo that the Amendment would modify, including the simple majority vote threshold for amendments, the petition signature requirements, and the provision for cure of amendment petitions.”

But the high court rejected that argument, saying that “contrary to [plaintiffs] suggestion, we have never held that ballot language must inform voters about current law.”

On balance, the state Supreme Court’s decision is likely to be seen as a setback for Democrats, who sought to clarify to voters how the proposed constitutional amendment will change the current status quo ahead of a potential abortion ballot measure.
Abortion rights activists are looking to put a measure on the ballot this November that would enshrine abortion protections in the state’s constitution. But if the ballot measure in August passes, it would make it harder for the potential abortion ballot measure in November to pass.

Ohio is one of a number of states where abortion opponents and other conservative activists are trying to make it harder to bring forward and ultimately pass popular ballot measures, as GOP lawmakers push policies are that are unpopular with the wider electorate.

He really needs to start shoring up his own legal defense. I think he's going to be answering some questions he won't like worth a fuck, pretty soon.

Michigan GOP chair, others fined $58K for lawsuit to reject absentee ballots
The chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party and others have been ordered to pay a $58,000 fine following an unsuccessful lawsuit that would have had thousands of ballots in the state’s midterm elections invalidated in November.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Kenny issued an order on Monday ruling that the lawsuit was “frivolous” and that those who brought the case and defended it should cover costs and attorney’s fees for the Detroit clerk’s office.

The fine was directed to Michigan GOP Chair Kristina Karamo, who lost an election for Michigan secretary of state in November; Daniel Hartman, who reportedly serves as counsel for the state party; and Alexandria Taylor, who is running as a Republican for the state’s open seat in the U.S. Senate.

Election observers who denied the results of the 2020 election and other plaintiffs also were directed to help pay the fine.
Karamo’s lawsuit was dismissed right before Election Day in November. The lawsuit would have changed Detroit’s voting practices to require voters to either cast their ballot in person or obtain an absentee ballot in person.

Kenny noted in dismissing the ruling that many absentee ballots had already been cast before Karamo filed the lawsuit and argued that ruling in her favor would disenfranchise tens of thousands of eligible voters. He slammed the lawsuit for failing to “produce any shred of evidence.”
“Plaintiffs’ failure to produce any evidence that the procedures for this November 8th election violate state or federal election law demonizes the Detroit City Clerk, her office staff, and the 1,200 volunteers working this election,” Kenny ruled at the time. “These claims are unjustified, devoid of any evidentiary basis and cannot be allowed to stand.”

The state constitution protects voters’ right to cast their ballots by mail.

“Plaintiffs merely threw out the allegation of ‘corruption in Detroit’ as the reason for disregarding the Michigan Constitution in this state’s largest city,” Kenny reportedly said in the order Monday. “A blanket assertion of corruption does not overturn a Michigan Constitutional provision.”
The Hill has reached out to Karamo for comment.

Karamo, who refused to concede defeat to incumbent Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D), was elected chair of the state Republican Party in February.

Taylor told the Free Press that the ruling is a “miscarriage of justice” and argued Kenny set the lawsuit up to fail because of limitations placed on arguments.

“This is why people don’t trust the judicial system,” she said.
