Research is key

I see alot of experts of this site getting annoyed with newbies that post thread that already exist or are very simple questions.

I know we have all done this it's all part of being newbie BUT if you wish to really learn the craft of growing please do research into certain aspects of growing, because it's fine asking questions but why when all the info is freely available if the net and in books

1.Lights (understand lumens and light spectrum's also look at threads that relate to your light set-up also look into light cycles)

2.Medium and Nutes (try to understand the importance of nutrients aka nutes read about the effect and need of each nute, soil is a medium so learn about your medium Hydro,bubbleponics...etc)

3.Stages of a grow (you might think this is simple but understanding when a plant is ready to begin a new stage or time within its life is very important this includes sexing since males plant flower before females so read into plant growing stages)

These are the very basics, as I'm no expert I can only share what I beleive are basics

To any other grower please add anything else you think Newbies should research before growing remember its just the basics not advanced growing techniques.:bigjoint:

It's a great idea but alas what I have seen is noob's dive in without a clue and then ask for help expecting a magic wand to fix it.
What happens with proper research is that you learn to figure out what is real info and what is voodoo
And there is a lot of voodoo on the forums

Thanks man, so many people will tell you so many different things I think instead looking at one source read into many so you judge it for yourself, because most people believe that they always right and will swear by they answer and usually argue with anyone who says otherwise

A few good examples are lights, those that have made a bud with a light will defend it and say all others are wrong and lord help us if another better light comes along people will ignore what is staring them in the face and argue that the old way is better,,,,but wait I have a book that says use incandesent for side/suplemental lighting from 1986 just as HID's were coming out
now there are ceramic metal halides and a 250 watt will do better than a 400 watt hps, one bulb for the whole grow and you can hold the bulb while it is on, yet I can only find 2 grows on this forum using them
oh yeah and those grows are rockin

fail to plan, plan to fail... too many ppl jus throw seeds in the dirt with the hopes of growing alot of great weed... then they run into problems and post like a mad man... u should spend a few mnths researching and planning b4 planting so ur not stuck in a bind trying to get answers... while they seek the answers of there planning they will find other tips that will help them along the way... i agree, research should be done prior and yes we r all a noob at some point, but save EVERY1 including ur self by researching first and know what ur getting into

I think riu is very tolerant of noobs. Basic questions are answered patiently day after day. Stupid questions like, "I want to grow indoors but I don't have any money. I have 3 seeds how much yiled will I get?" go ignored and the reason is obvious. If anyone gets mad at newbie questions, what are they doing reading the newbie forum?

Yes but also look at other sites read books and to
have 1 source isn't a rounded perspective:wall:
so then you need to start your faq elsewhere so that people can have the RIU FAQ and your FAQ for perspective? i'm failing to see the point of this.

you do not need a "perspective" to grow marijuana, it's not a hobby based upon opinions and sides. you get your seed, you grow it. the ways shown here are tried and trusted and proven.

the only debate and "conflicting evidence" is when people are debating topping vs LST for yield, etcm something totally irrelevant for newbs.

i was a newb, i read stuff on here, now i can grow plants, i didn't need to look elsewhere to learn the basics.

i think they should ask away.

there's no such thing as a stupid question, and whoever believes that forgets that at one point they had no idea either, so they asked questions too....

you know who didn't ask a "stupid question"? the guy working at chernobyl, when he noticed that a temperature gague didn't move that morning... he thought nothing of it, didn't ask his partner, who was right beside him.... a couple of hours later the biggest nuclear meltdown in history happened. approx. 1 million people died because that guy didn't ask a "stupid question".....

Why are you arguing for the sake of arguing?

1.It isn't just lst vs topping which creates debates ask anyone how many lumens is needed per plant and sq feet, can you flower under CFL's etc etc
2.Of course you need a perspective otherwise you will be lost in sides and opinions and caught in point number 1
3. I'm sure you can grow plants but are you growing with limited knowledge are you yielding what you could be yielding could you use your knowledge for growing others plants
4. I completely agree about using FAQ and threads but why not look around and cross check info, where's the harm in doing that
5.For many Growing weed isn't just a hobby for some it's a job its money or its medicine

I can't repeat myself anymore

Here's my .02...

I've read all the FAQ, guides, used the search feature, google, you name it. I've read a shitload. I still think asking questions no matter what is a good thing. Who's to say techniques have not changed, technology progressed, or even someone more knowledgeable may happen to be online.

Repeat questions, get different answers from different people each time. Which in turns helps out. Then when someone like me uses the search feature I get a good amount of info.
