Reverse Osmosis Filter Questions

Okay so I am going to be installing a RO water filter system but I keep getting confused. I have a res thats 40 gallons and it would be ideal to be able to fill this up in an evening. Most of the RO water filter systems I have been shopping only have a 7-12 gpd (gallon per day?) MAX?? WTF, Am I crazy thinking that I need one that will at least do 50 gpd, do they make these?

I cant be the only one using RO, what do some of you experts use and do for workflow? Any incite would be appreciated.

Also let me know if you have any questions or neeed further explanation of what I mean.

Cheers

So it will take a few days to fill your rez. Most grocery stores sell RO water, as do aquarium stores. Grocery stores don't change the filters as often, but that's what I use.

Or u could do what I did and I am ooooober happy with my purchase. go to ebay and search under "Portable RO water System" and they are only 65 dollars for a 50 GPD and 70 for a 100 GPD and u canalso add a DIY filter so u get 0 PPM I now run mine n get 20 PPM it's awesome. It runs off of your sink and only requires and 5/8-15/16 adapter from your sink both male ends if I remember correctly. You can get this at osh or Home Depot. Happy Smokin!

Sounds like you need to get a 50 gallon holding tank and a float valve. keep it topped off and you will have the 40 gallons of RO you need.

Hydrologic has some pretty nice RO systems.

They have a 100-200gpd system I think.
I have the HydroLogic Stealth RO-100 unit. I also have a 48 gal skinny tall rez. I love the stealth. We're on well water, near 285-300'ish ppm out of the tap, and about 8.3pH. The Stealth RO-100 takes it down to 7.3pH and 0ppm (as measured by my Bluelab Guardian). Awesome stuff! :)

I'm using a stealth RO-200 with 2 50 gallon reservoirs + float valves.
Working great so far.

Yeah I bought their float valve for our res as well and have it installed. Haven't filled it up yet tho as I've only needed a gallon or so at a time so far due to just starting the grow (see sig). What do you think of your stealth ro-200? Like it?

I'm pretty impressed by mine...to the point Im thinking when I do it big I'm going Big Boy with merlin GP...Hydrologic seems to be first class!

oh yeah, home units usually go up to 150gpd (this is what I run, but with my water pressure I get closer to 100-110gpd, I need to buy a pressure pump, d'oh). Commercial ones start around 150-200gpd and go way way up there. From what I understand the 50 and 150gpd units are more efficient than the others (efficiency meaning they produce less waste per volume filtered).

I will say, I have used RO for my aquariums for a long time and it's tempting to look at 20 or 50 gpd and think you'll never use that much. However, there's a chance you won't produce the max output with your water pressure, and also there is nothing worse than needing water and having to wait 24 hours while it makes it. I'd always suggest going much beefier than you actually use.

The one I have is http://www.purewaterclub.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=316, and I've been quite happy with it.

Exactly! The 100 or 200 gallons per day that Hydrologic claims are nowhere near actual output, that is like near perfect conditions...probably going to be substantially less in reality. I haven't filled my rez up yet, but when I do I'll make note of how long it took to fill to see about the claims of 100gal per day on my stealth ro-100.

I'm getting about 50-60'ish PSI on my pressure gauge, so that is perfect! You want 40-60, but the higher end of that scale is better as that produces more.

Yeah I just fill five gallon drums that I put in my tub and fill takes about 1 1/2 hours to fill each container. The water Goes in at 7.8ph and 150ppm and comes out 6.3ph and 24ppm perfect for my soiled plants and my hydro. Its hell of alot better than running back and forth to safeway to get water and totin those 40 pound barrels. So happy and my plants are as well. You guys have awesome setups though, I just run a smaller garden for myself. Have a great day and happy growin people!

All your replys are fantastic, thank you all soo much for being so detailed with your responses. They are better then I thought. Reminded me why rollitup is the best. Thats fantastic.. Thanks to you all. I tried to give you all rep+ but I used it all up lol.. Sorry.. I will let yall know what I get, I didnt purchase last week, I am only 2 weeks into veg so they arnt drinking alot yet.

Since I have started have been buying all my water from walmart. This makes for alot of traveling with insane amount of water, LEO would be like wtf, and also a ton of waste and I remove all waste offsite recycling which is also suspicous I feel.

I look forward to setting up my RO system.

Quick question, did you guys see your water bill go through the roof once you installed RO system? I have read they waste a ton of water..

Thanks again, BL

I have a 200 gpd and a 100 gpd stealth system. I use my 200 to fill my 100 gallon res but it takes about 10 hours to fill. I use my 100 gpd to fill my 3 40 gallon res and it takes about 8 hours to fill each 40 gallon res. They are extremely slow.....
