I have a filter on my tap water that takes out excess chlorine and sediments. My water reigsters at 200ppm. Do I really need a RO reverese osmosis system?

if you soften your water with salt YES if you have regular tap water not softened you can always use it just let it sit for a day or two to allow the chlorine to evaporate.

i personally only use RO but have many friends that have great results with simple tap/ rain water

mixing RO with tap is also viable and cheaper too. If you use RO exclusively you will probably have to use cal/mag or other supplements because much of the solids removed are calcium and magnesium. easy enough to get but usually you won't need it (IME) if you use the mix.

200 ppm seems a little high to me. My tap comes out at 20-30 ppm. I still opted for a two phase filter, one if a 5 micron prefilter and one is a catalyzed carbon filter designed to greatly reduce chloramine (not chlorine).

Chloramine is chlorine bonded with amonia and that is what is in my water. I still add cal/mag as micronutrients are essential to good plant growth
