I am a network admin in the army, and I can tell you that the police did not track it down by IP. To do that it would have involved rollitup and the persons ISP to give up information. It's very possible to get the metadata off of most pics, and if your taking pics with a smart phone with gps enabled sometimes the exact gps location of the picture along with when it was taken and such. If was related to any posted pics it most likely was just that his computer was seized and the pics were just used as evidence of some kind.

Enough with the meta data argument. Everyone knows about meta data. If you copy paste the image into a new document, and save the new image, no more meta data.

Enough with the metadata argument???

You're the clown that ressurected a 4 year old post that has its last post over 12months ago.

If you want the metadata crap to quit, quit ressurected ancient threads about this shit.

Yeah
You could do four months 'standing on your head' because you are, quite obviously, a hardcore GANGSTER!

But for people more like myself (mature enough to have on-going responsibilities) spending four months out of the 'rat race-earn to pay the bills' game would cause DEVASTATION!

Just do me a favour-
If you want to talk tough and act like a menace to society, do it somewhere where REAL PEOPLE can call you on it.

Using internet forums to talk about how crime savvy you are is a technological advancement to what used to be known as 'telephone tough guys'.

Or you could just take a long, hard look in the mirror and give yourself an almighty SLAP!

I'm here because I like to grow weed.
You need to grow UP.

Internet GANGSTERS!!!!
Sad.......

does anyone have any knowledge on ip address locating, the effectivness of spyware like macafee, links between you and your pics, or any other type of technology used by lawenforcement geeks to find and locate criminals, we would all love to hear your proffensional opinions. thats all ill say, lol, i want to keep this thread short/sweet and informative. thnx.
They can try a lot of things, but, big but, they would have to have some probable cause to get a warrant to go any further than suspicion. To get identified by a pic, someone would have to have location settings on their smart phone on. Or post something in the pic where they can be identified (pic of yourself) or something in the pic background (an address, easily identifiable/recognizable landmark). Just make sure location settings for your camera are off and you don't post anything that can identify you in the pics.

Reading all of this metadata paranoia is quite entertaining.

It's actually not at all trivial to clear metadata written to your photos if you have a Windows machine. On Windows 7 & 8, there is an option under the image properties tab that allows you to reset all metadata to basic information like file size and resolution.

I'm not entirely sure if this works on Vista or XP

1) Right click your image
2) Click Properties
3) Select the Details tab
4) Down at the bottom click Remove Properties and Personal Information
5) Select Remove the following properties from this file
6) Click Select All at the bottom
7) Click OK twice to exit the Properties panel

That's it, no more metadata, you can now upload your photos knowing they won't be traced back to you. Hope this helps ;)

I know this is an old thread but wanted to give some insights for others. Exif (Exchangeable Image File Format) is most likely the cause or pulling the IP from a post. These are easily avoidable but 2 of the easiest ways to locate someone from the internet. All are passive (don't need client connected) and can be done at anytime. Exif data is as easy to obtain as me saving an image off this forum. Downloading a 100% free program, 2 min later I can know a lot:

"Since the Exif tag contains metadata about the photo, it can pose a privacy issue. For example, a photo taken with a GPS-enabled camera can reveal the exact location and time it was taken, and the unique ID number of the device - this is all done by default - often without the user's knowledge. Many users may be unaware that their photos are tagged by default in this manner, or that specialist software may be required to remove the Exif tag before publishing."

Now think about the tracking a cellphone does on a daily basis, this can all be stored directly in every image you take. Even some full point and shoot cameras have GPS solely for Geo location of the image. One picture could potentially give away EVERYTHING law enforcement needs to find you. Pulling your IP from posted images is just as easy to determine where it came from, I would advise using Proxy or VPN during uploading to be truly anonymous. Scary amounts of data is stored behind images taken with cellphones, unless deliberately turned off. -Remember most record this information by DEFAULT out of the box...

Not the best but will cover most of your bases:

Also be careful what information you deem "unimportant" something as trivial as a unique device ID of your camera is just as troublesome as your actual IP. All devices (specially apple products) had a unique ID similar to a "private" serial. It identifies you to the device for replacements and essentially their customer database. So if you registered that product and took a photo with that Iphone or Ipod then uploaded they could still just as easily link you to the device. This is why I never register or give any company "warranty info" unless I am replacing it. Otherwise you are just filling in more information for the giant ever so watchful Gov databases. (Also if you do this you are open to hacking, Apple found that out when hackers grabbed like 2 million Apple accounts with personal information...guess what...all related to unique Apple ID.

Just because it isn't your home address or social security # does not mean it can't harm you. Everyone should be careful what databases they are filling info into...FAR too many unsecured ones out there, sitting with entire work ups including credit card information just a simple DDOS attack away.

You are all fucking Cops or people trying to steal knowledge or to rip me off in my opinion. And every post I’ve been seen on Rollitup has cops in it. Everyone. If you actually post a pic that is t years old, and you don’t live there, or anyone you like, than you sir/ma’am are retarded.

I’ve only been on her a second I have picked out 3 -4 “WelKnown Members” who are cops. Well follow the metadata and come get me.
