I couldn't see how the non return valve would work as it still goes the same way. Please tell me if I'm wrong. The same thing as Dr Who suggested. Have I got it wrong then with the anti syphon? Should I use both? I have found the plastic ones you've suggested and I've actually ordered a different pump now as well, a 2700lh one compared to the mj1000 so hopefully more power to combat the tube rise.

Yeah anti siphon valve! That's the one......On the farm I call them all check valves and that's not correct technically.

Check valve is so the liquid does not back flow though the pump and it then looses prime.
Anti siphon will stop your problem, kind of an opposite.
A "check" valve will not work as an anti siphon in some applications. Due to the pressure that it requires to open it...

No need to get or use each!

And it adds DO to the Rez :). I use the same deal for my flood and drain and modified systems to add lots of DO tO the res's

Check valves stop back flow. You could add a loop at the highest point with an anti siphon valve but they tend to fuck up. If you can't move your plants higher or pump lower then do as jay says :).

I had siphoning in a drip system just last week. Simple fix: drilled a hole at the highest point of the hose line and fitted a 1/4" elbow connector and 1/4" pipe to run back into the res just above the water line.

When the pump runs the new line allows the lost water pressure back into the res and when it isn't the line draws in air and prohibits siphon.

A quick and easy $1 fix and does the same job if you don't gave a check valve to hand.

OK. So I've installed the anti siphon valve at the highest point. Also installed a new pump. When the system first turns on, water pours out the bottom of the valve for a few seconds then stops. Good thing it's over the reservoir. When it turns off, after a few seconds I can hear like a suck noise and the water stops dripping out of the drippers so I think it's working. It's the water pouring out at the beginning that I wasn't expecting, is it suppose to do that?

Yes that's normal, you want to have some sort of valve on the anti siphon line so you don't lose too much pressure, you don't need alot of air to make sure it doesn't siphon. For instance I have a ¼ inch line on my 1 inch feel line and I still have the valve closed off a little so I do not lose to much pressure.

Edit: sorry you put in a valve not the cheapo way like I did.

I was in such a panic that I went into overdrive to get it sorted and ordered one. I'm all about cheap mate! Hopefully this will be it sorted then.
