Root or Rot?

Anybody know if my clones are rooting or rotting? Heres a pic





Those little white nubs, are they the beginning of roots?

Heres how Im cloning them:

Man, that don't look good to me. If they have been in there for a week or more, with no micro roots, I would change my plans.

Consider soil.
Premoisten a sandy rooting soil mix.
Cut off the bottom inch of stem.
Put a couple slit cut on two sides of the stem.
Dip the stems in Rootone.
Use a pencil to drill a hole in the soil, 1-2 inches deep.
Push the soil tight against the stem.
Water lightly next few days.

im gonna try and rub on it to see if it comes off like mold. the cutting has been in there for two weeks and its growing new leaves. it has some smaller normal looking roots on the very bottom. i'll have better pics in a minute, my computer is sucking right now.

heres the pic:



i tried scraping with a exacto blade on one of the nubs and its not mold its growth from the stem. you can see one large bulbous growth where cuttings usually grow root from.

smokinmec, the silica stones are to keep the cutting stable and keep light out of the root area.
