Im curious on more info than I obtain on trimming back VEG plant roots ? I have some bonsai mums I feel have come to there first trim dates. They are in hydro media so Ill just pull them out and trim the roots coming out of the cubes, sound good ?Any how shoot.

#1 What would be a SAFE time between trimmings and when does growth restart after cut.

#2 1/3 the correct length to remove ??

#3 What is the SAFE and respectable time to allow from time of trim to going into FLO ??

Appreciate the love :) Never messed with roots b4 looking forward to the new adventure but need knowledge.

im also interested in this. i plan on putting 3 mommas in a 10 gallon tote. with dwc roots get huge so i was wondering if i could keep them trimmed back to keep them from getting all tangled. and also to keep the plants fairly small. im guessing the best time to trim the roots would be when clones are trimmed off, or would this put too much stress on the plant all at once? i once read that if you trim the roots its a good idea to trim equal amounts of vegetation so that the smaller root mass will be able to support the plant.

I had some bonzai style moms. The technique is pretty simple. Once your roots consume the pot they are in, pull the plant out like you're going to transplant it. Grab a nice big bread knife. I got off a third of the bottom and about 20% off all the sides. I put dirt in the bottom of the pot to make up for the cut off roots. Once I put the plant back in I filled in the sides.

Trimming these roots is a common way to keep the plant size down and inhibit some growth. In a few weeks to a month the roots will fill in and I cut back and add dirt again.

I'll check out your grow. As long as you don't cut too deep into the main root ball you can do this for many years to this mom.

i train real bonsai, and part of regular maintenace on them is root pruning. best time in bonsai-world is in spring, right when plant is coming out of dormancy and new growth is exploding. you can prune the roots at any time the plant is actively growing, but it will take a little longer to come back. the most important thing to remember is that you have to trim branches and leaves too - try to take off branches/leaves equal to the ammount of roots you pruned. would be a good idea to take some cuttings while youre pruning. also, dont prune the roots randomly, but act as though they were branches too - thin them rather than chopping off the last 6". no nutes for a week or so afterwards, then work em up from about 1/4 strength. keep in mind, too that the more you do this to a plant the faster it recovers in the future, but i wouldnt suggest doing it more than every nine months for any mj plants.
if you google bonsai root pruning you should get some good links. remember that people prune roots on 200-year old, priceless bonsai, so if you follow what they do, your momma will be fine, probably even healthier in the long run.
