Roots Reaching Reservoir Water

I have had my 3 plants in 12/12 for about 3 weeks. Their roots have just had explosive growth since then. I am growing using a drip hydroponic system with 5 gallons of water in the reservoir. The roots have grown so long that they are now touching the water. Is this a problem? I don't have any air stones - just water sitting in the reservoir.

Thanks for the help!

Actually that is great. This is what you want to happen. If you are using a drip system the the solution will get some aerration as it burbles through your grow medium but an airstone in the rez certainly wont hurt. One side benefit of the roots dangling in the rez is if your pump ever fails your plants wont die right away from lack of water.

There seems to be a no air is fine crowd. I am not one of those. Airstones are your friend. $10 gets you a small pump. $30 gets you a little more pump. I would go with the $30 pump.

The aeration will keep algae, slime and other muck from growing. And your roots will like the res more.... which means more roots will grow in it if there is air. The roots that do grow in the bubbling water will be mainlining nutes and water.

ALSO having an extra airstone and extra bucket, helps with flushes and nute changes. A couple hours of aeration will de-chlorinate the water. A bubbling bucket is also a great way to mix a batch of nutes.

this man took the words out of my mouth, although you'd be good w/ the $10 air pump.
