The moment of truth!

6.06 !
Close enough, I'll take that. (Sometimes I surprise myself)
If I tried to add a pinch of pH Down, it would go too far, no matter how little I added. I am not chasing the pH, I am not riding the pH Roller Coaster.

I know the pH Roller Coaster!!!

Weeeeeeeeeee!!!

I was just-a-ridin' her until very recently. :wall:

I'm Just amazed that in 90 days your going to harvest just as a comparison I have a couple of plants in soil that are about 45 days along and the tallest one is about a foot I think my bubbleponic system which is my first is maybe a day or two ahead of yours but I didn't soak the seeds like you I just sat them in the rockwool as I was told to do from your favorite hydro store Stealth Hydro I'm looking foreward to seeing the bubbleponic plants out grow the ones in soil.
I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying this thread.

I'm impressed with all this information....THANK YOU!! And its free. Can't beat that. Only thing is I wish I would have IGNORED all of your other posts from earlier grows as you have contradicted previous advice which I have already followed. All things said and done...I have my own little peepers looking at me now with beautiful green leaves. This is the ONLY thread I will follow from now on. Thanks for all the advice Roseman. Much work for our benefit...bubbleheads rule.

Hey Roseman....I thought I would post a couple of pics for everyone to see a 1- plant bubble bucket.

I have the same thing Roseman has going in his bucket (two air stones, submersible pump w/irrigation hub.) From the irrigation hub I have three lines running into my cup to make sure there is ample water coverage on my rockwool. Hope this helps.

Mabye you have already said this but I thought you would show how to do a grow with out the PH pen and use the strips. (I am proably wrong)

I do not have any available pH TEST STRIPS to demonstate to you. But as you watch this GROW, you will see I do not try to be precise or dead on the money. When I want 5.9 as perfect, I will gladly accept anything between 5.5 and 6.5.

I have done 4 GROWS with TEST STRIPS, and they work just fine.

Mistakes I made

Growers evolve and change as they learn. I 've used mirrors, tinfoil, miracle grow, (yep, really, killed 6 2 week old plants in two days) and I've learned from experience, 8 grows and 3 years. I am still learning too.

Hey Roseman, looking good!! I'm just about 3 days behind you, as my seeds TODAY have just begun to crack open (at least 2 of them).

I wanted to share a quick thought on seeds while we're all on the topic:

That is, I had these 2 seeds (don't know what they are but they are from a "Club" in Cali) and they are 2 years or older, probably 2.25. Anyways, I tried to germ them about a month ago before I decided to take some time off and revamp my grow accoutrements. Anywho, I germed them on a wet paper towel for 2 days and then put them in soil. I waited a week and kept it moist - NOTHING. I literally gave in and dismantled the pots and soil, filtered them through to find the seeds, and after about an hour found them both (AMAZINGLY!!) :)

Fast forward to 3 days ago. I took those 2 same seeds (which I had kept who knows why) and 2 new seeds (from the same 2.25 year old batch I had from when I left Cali) and put them in WATER (as YOU suggested). That's right, a container with a sealed lid. I actually LOVE to use those BUBBLES you get up front in those Wal-Mart candy/toy machines - the ones my daughter has like a hundred of by now. She gives them to me and I find all sorts of uses for it (mostly related to Marijuana of course). Anyways, I had that sealed full of water for 3 days with 4 seeds. Yesterday I moved it to less light and more warmth (garage cupboard) and today I have 2 cracked seeds/sprouts peeking out. The ones which sprouted both were the ones I tried before - likely because the shell was already mostly weakened from a previous germination attempt. The other 2 likely are another day or more away but I'm just glad I finally got the 2 seeds to sprout. Who knew a seed could go through so much deprivation (2.25 years) and then a failed germ attempt and then STILL be able to germinate!! MARVELOUS!! Life is just amazing!!

Anyways, I just thought I'd share. DON'T GIVE UP IF YOU DON'T SEE SPROUTS IN 2-3 DAYS, KEEP WAITING!! Dark + Warmth + 100% Humidity/Moisture = THE KEY!! :)

So now I am soaking my Rockwool (also overnight) in ~ 5.5 pH water. It is cold and I think it will go up (it rarely goes down) so it might end up being ~6.0 after the night, who knows. Anyways it is good enough for a Rockwool pre-soaking!

Which leads me to my question TO YOU - You show rinsing your Hrydroton - I will do that soon as well, but I noticed you are NOT rinsing with pH nuetral (or ~6.0 pH) water... WHY IS THAT?? The Hydroton rocks surely hold a TON of water (hence the name, right?) so I would imagine that hydroton-contained water will affect pH to some degree, no?

Just a thought... I might plan to pre-soak/rinse my Hydroton in ~6.0 pH water if that is the case - what do you think?

Thanks again!!

I really rinsed mine in my tap water, about 7.06 then poured a gallon of 5.9 of water over it and failed to mention it, I got in a hurry. I;ll go back, thanks for catching that.

Oh ok, cool! Good to know - I'll do the same. Probably try to let them drip/air dry for a while then will douse/pre-soak them in ~5.9 pH and then eventually put them into the cups and begin. :)

I liked your explanation for using tap water roseman. Well thought out, I think some people have very poor water quality and are not blessed with good water out of the tap.

I personally have used tap water for years and never really had any problems. I am now leaning towards getting a RO system for my next set-up. I won't even be doing hydro, but I want pure water to brew my organics. I also like the fact that the water is always Ph 7 and 0 ppm. That allows me total control over what I put into it.

I also found it interesting what you said about Ph buffers. The Calcium they put in municipal tap water can bring the Ph sometimes as high as 9! It seems to vary in my area the ph of the tap is anywhere between 7.8-8.5. I was surprised you got more Ph flux with "filtered" water? Are you sure it was not spring water? or Municipal water from somewhere else? (bottled water industry is a scam, most of it comes right out the tap).

Good Hydroponic nutrient solutions should also contain buffers that seem to work better in RO water. Saves a lot of Ph down . . .

I think its important for serious growers to KNOW their water source, you can easily look up your local water report. If it is not posted on the internet just call your local utility and they will send you a local water report. It can be interesting, my water for example contains a small amount of radioactive barium from, Uranium mining and drilling in the area . . .

A water report can also tell you if you have Chlorine or Chloramine in your water, as you stated earlier this is a very important distinction.

Ok I'll stop ranting now, good to see you using personal experience over Jorge C bullshit . . . :peace:

Roseman, after reading this thread and seeing that I was experiencing the PH Roller Coaster, and my PPM was outta whack (just got my PPM meter :-P), I didn't want too, but I knew I had to do a reservoir change to get the situation back under control. Not only that, I just got back from Lowes, Wally World, & the Local Hardware store w/ the exact setup as yours......

And to only mimic others, This has been simply the best informative outline and discriptive tutorial on bubbleponics for the newly laymen grower....Appreciate the time took on the thread, and I'll be keeping up, Thanks :peace:

i like what you said about the water also. i have well water and ive been buying 5gal bottles for 5dollars a pop. the water in my house it "Treated" while the hose outside for my garden is "untreated" straight from the well. Which would be better to work with??

as it is the water starts with ph:7 and ppm:around 350

Jerkin,

Now you right up my alley. I have 7.5 tap water with 350-375 ppm . Personally I use cal-mag the help the plants as hard water seems to limit the natural uptake and cal-mag gives it to the plants chelated (sort of like partially digested or in smaller bits the plants roots can absorb.). I'd at least have it handy if problems arise. Maybe try to 1/2 dose it and see what happens.

I did the water hauling for awhile but decided to take it easy on myself and try tap water 15' away from the grow room and adjust as needed. I also use GH flora series nutes with hard water micro with good success.

Treated using a water softener? If so use the untreated well water.
