sampling buds

When is it ok to clip a nug off of a flowering plant? Is it better when they first start to form or when the cloas start to get that conical look to them. I assume lower bud sites whould be the best place as to direct more of the plants energy to the top?

Also, when should a plant start to form the trichs? A couple weeks before harvest?

This is my first grow and just curious. I dont know what strain it is either. Bought 10 seeds and got 20 randoms free so I used the random seeds for practice

Back when I was a more novice grower and still learning, the idea to do this because I couldnt wait to see what I grew smoked like was strong. :) Resist. It's weed, it'll grow. Keep it simple!

If you really still want to clip bud to try, grab some at the top third of the plant, and toss it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Next morning it'll be nice and crisp to smoke. Wont give you the full high, of course, and it will be a different high because everything isnt "finished" yet.

Yeah my first grow I couldnt resist.. They looked and smelled sooo good. Quick dried them in the oven at 170 for like 30 mins. Smoke is harsh and tastes like cholorophyll (grassy) but omg I was surprised that shit floored me.. This was like 3 weeks before harvest, I clipped the 4th biggest cola.

seed,

Trichs usually start to show around week 4-5 of flowering, but it varies a lot with strain. A pure sativa is going to start showing them later, while an Indica would show them earlier. There are some people who claim they start getting trichs a week or two into flowering because of the nutrients/methods they use, but I haven't seen any real proof that it wasn't just something unusual about the strain they were growing.

As for yield- That is something that is impossible to predict because it varies so much. The strain/genetics matter, but so do the enviromental conditions, nutrients, and amount of time you let the plant veg before flowering. There are also techniques like topping and fimming that can increase yield, so thats one of those things every grower has to learn to judge on their own. I would say that you shouldn't stress to much about it on the first grow though. This is a learning experience and chances are you will make plenty of mistakes that will reduce your final yield, so just try to learn from them and worry about yield on the 2nd or 3rd grow when you have a better idea of what to expect out of your plants. As long as you get the plant to harvest you've come out ahead of at least 25% of the new posters here, so don't sweat it.

Thanks Ed.
Yeah Im not corncerned with my yield. Looking at the plants it appears that my yeild should be OK. I just dont buy smoke and want to sample a bud. I killed a male plant when it showed itself and kept some of the top leaves. Naturally it was harsh and tasted like nutes/chlorophyll.
