4 x 10^15 is the simple math problem we are looking at.
PEMDAS dictates we start with the exponent (in case you are confused, that's the part that says 10^15, which us math types call an exponent).
10^15 = 1000000000000000 (15 zeroes)
then you multiply by 4 (that's the other part, where there is a 4 and an "x" which us math types read as "multiply")
4 x 1000000000000000 = 4000000000000000. 15 zeroes.
but let's try it your way, and then multiply 4 TIMES TEN and then raise it to the 15th.
1.0737418e+24
yeah, that's a completely different number. like any simpleton would know.
4 x 10^15, the number expressed in your citation, is a 4 followed by 15 zeroes.

ok, lets make it Super Easy.
4x10 = 40.
4x10 to the first = 400
4x10 to the second = 4000
4x10 to the third = 40,000
see how that works?
4x10 = 40 then you add X number of zeroes, where X is the little number in superscript above
thats why X times 10 to the Yth is used, to make the math easy.
only assholes use a number other than 10 before they initiate exponentiation cuz then you arent adding zeros or multiplying by ten, youre multiplying Z by Z, and thats a dick move.
