Second Grow 09/10/07

Well here I am at the beginning of my second grow, and a little wiser because of it. I just thought I'd put everything down in writing this time so I can eventually look back and see what I did. I germinated 11 seeds I bought from BCSeedking (amazing deal by the way, highly recommended). Five were Kahuna and six were Kush. You're probably wondering why I chose to do 11 instead of a more logical number like 10, but it's because I wanted to experiment with vegetating one of the seeds in EZ-Coco. Unfortunately while I was planting the germinated seeds into their pots I somehow lost one of the Kush. I have no idea how and I'm still pissed about it. I must have been searching for that damn seed for about 2 hours. Oh well, I'll experiment with EZ-Coco next time.

I now have 5 of each strain for a total of 10. Nine of the ten were completely germinated when I planted them with the tenth tap root (Kahuna) barely peeking out. I'll be keeping an eye on this one because during my first grow I had a similar problem where the late seed never popped out of the soil. So at the worst I'll have 9 total plants.

They're all in a mix of perlite and FoxFarm Ocean Forest in 1 quart containers under 4 high output T5 fluorescent bulbs. Two are blue spectrum 6000K, 2 are red spectrum 3500K. They're lighting schedule is currently 24/0, but I will be cutting back to 18/6 once they have completely popped out of the soil. Current temperature and rh are 77F and 52%, respectively, Flowering will be done under a 600W digital HPS and all will be transplanted into 1 gallon containers with he same soil mixture. Ventilation for the HPS includes a sealed Euro cooling reflector exhausted by a 6" 250cfm inline fan into another room. Air intake is achieved with a normal 16" fan.

I think that covers everything for now. If not, I'll update. If anyone has any questions or comments, feel free to post, but please try to keep it relevant to my grow.

Just a short little update. All five of the Kush are looking very strong. One of them already has a set of leaves (which is strange because they were all germinated at the same time). The Kahuna are definitely disappointing me so far. Two of them look normal, but two others are having problems standing up. Their stems are just way too thin to support the top of the seedling. I think it may be because they were the free seeds sent from BCSeedking. Something tells me there's a reason why they were free, but that's fine.

That fifth Kahuna that never germinated is now just starting to show its taproot. Moral of the story: don't give up on germinating even the most difficult seeds. All of the others were ready to plant in 3-5 days. This guy just started showing in 10 and probably won't be ready to plant for another day or two.

Well all of the Kahuna died. Something tells me they gave them to me for free because of poor genetics. They popped out of the soil just fine, but then the stem would never develop and the leaves eventually just forced it to collapse. The 5 Kush look beautiful though. Nice and strong, all working on their first pair of actual leaves. I'm currently germinating 5 more Kush (BCSeedking sent me 16 seeds total) to add to this crop.

I also set up my 600W HPS today to see how I should do ventilation. What an amazing lighting system. $300 for a digital ballast, bulb, airtight Euroreflector, and 6" 200cfm inline fan. I can barely even hear it and the ballast stays nice and cool. Highly recommended for anyone who wants an upgrade. Total lumen output is 95,000.

Pictures to come soon.
