Second grow: Cheap but a promising start

i started some four seeds the other week. they finally are looking a bit more interesting so i thought i would post a picture of one of them before i bend them over for lst. they all pretty much look the same at this point so that's why i don't want to post pictures of all of them. this one is a bit brighter green than the others though and it photographed better as i remembered to turn my camera to the macro setting. this is my second grow actually and the first time my plant didn't really look like this. i started it outdoors my first time. this time they are all under T5s. i only have three of the bulbs on right now but i have six total and they're the four foot variety. i don't know how many gallons the buckets are i think they do alright. they're typical buckets that you buy at a hardware store? miracle grow potting soil with moisture control. i know a lot of people don't like miracle grow but i figured it is better than generic and i don't want to use fertilizers because people seam to have more trouble using them then when they don't. i didn't have any nutrient problems my first grow and i don't see why i would this time. so like i said i'm planning on bending them over today then when they are tall enough i will add a screen for scrog. because i'm sick of growing from seed then i will take cuttings before i switch to 12/12 then after flowers show i will throw out the males and continue growing the females under some weak bulbs just to keep them rooting and alive until the crop is harvested and i get the lights back for the longer light schedule.

so from last night..

plants are looking good, but sounds like you're going to need a dedicated mother/clone room if you want another harvest. Clones taken from an older plant do much better. To me, I'd rather have the ability to harvest cuttings whenever I want than use my lighting for only one grow.

this was the plant from my first grow. not a lot of bud. not very dense bud but i enjoyed the parenting. it was grown outside for most of its life then i had to move it around 3 weeks after the start of flowering and it only received light from two 13W CFLs. i still think it looks pretty.

Wow dude I'm impressed you even got that after transplanting in flower and under those lights. You must be doing something right

it would be ideal. right now im lacking the space and the money. the best i can do i think is to pull cuttings before flowering so that i know i'll have females to work with rather than throwing out males and replacing them and doing 12/12 from seed constant. idk. i have been thinking about a mother but there might be a mental block as well. having a mother is definitely a whole other level than not having a mother. im a newbie after all.

didn't transplant.. it was in a pot. but it was a rather small pot and was definitely root bound. think i planted it at the beginning of july and harvested a couple weeks before the end of october? idr. soil was just some stuff in the pot already. water was just tap.. i'm a "poor college student" so it might sound neglectful but i simply decided to spend the money i did have on other things.

this update was taken from tonight about an hour ago with an enV 2. this is just after i added some wire to hold back the main stem. i decided not to do it the other day mainly because i was feeling lazy.

when you grow from seed, the plant grows straight up and leaves pop out of the top and alternate between say.. north and south to east and west and the plant just continues to grow like this. but branches also want to pop out of where the fan leaves originate. without adequate light these branches don't really develop but if you bend the main stem to one of the sides and adjust the upper fan leaves then light will reach these areas and they will grow more vigorously, making your plant remain shorter for a while but become much bushier. technique works same for cuttings of course but i've never grown for them so i'm not sure if the growth pattern is the exact same. i wanted to give you more of a visual for describing what happens.
it's called lst and there are different ways to do it. i suggest you familiarize yourself with it because it is definitely something you should put to practice unless you're doing a sog, imo

1. timer broke and lights unknowingly went out for.. who knows how long.
2. 2 maybe 3 (can't remember if i'm double counting) of the 4 showed female flowers. none showed male.
3. bought a new timer. i'm on 20/4 right now. was at 24/0 after the timer broke so i wouldn't have to fuck with it
4. was experiencing signs of nute burn (wilting and yellowing of leaf edges) started giving each plant a whole pitcher of water to allow the excess nutrients to runoff each watering.. they are indeed looking much better.. either that or the plant didn't like having dry patches in the soil. either way though..

i'll take some real pictures again soon but i just took this with my phone ealier tonight

here it is. see what im dealing with.. one has some wilting still but it's been getting better and the other you can see the leaves have lighter edges, still.. it's too getting better. and i'm not sure but seams like the one just won't abandon it's flowers. anyone know how long that takes?

i've got the lights kind of far away but i'm trying to get some height on these plants now they've bushed out and i feal like the air circulation was suffering from having the nodes too close together so i'm going to move the lights closer just a while before i get the net involved.

that reminds me..

anyone know or have an opinion on at what point the screen is considered to be "full".. should i aim for a node every 2..3 inches after the stretch or what?
