Seedlings and Medium Question

I'm getting ready to pop a couple more seeds and switching it up a bit to hopefully increase my germination rate, as my last round was a 50% success and I was surprised as my heating mat I think killed half my seeds. I purchased Fox Farm Happy Frog and was thinking of soaking the seeds in water for a few hours, then germinating directly into the soil. I also have Rockwool I could use as well.

My question - Is the Happy Frog going to be too strong for them to germ in? Or should I place seeds in rockwool then wait until they show?

Thanks for any advice!

i would have added some peat moss to the mix. seedlings don't need any added nutes. and you risk burning big time cuz happy frog comes a little hot to begin with. it's not too late to put the seeds into a sterile medium or one thats not as hot. i never used rockwool. i don't like it. but many growers do and have success with it.

Just get you some jiffy pucks to start them. I love them for seed starting and cuttings.. I even start my hydro cuttings in jiffy pucks.. That way you wont have to worry about the soil being too hot.

I can't get to my local grow shop today. Any chance Walmart or Target carry the Jiffy pucks? My issue with Rockwool is they dry up extremely fast! Especially sitting in the dome on a heat mat.

Were you germinating in wet paper towels? That often causes problems for some people.

Wmart usually has pucks, as well as seed starter mix.

I usually germinate in the paper towels(on a plate). really not that bad...but when I did use the heat mat....I think I almost lost my seedlings, hopefully not, seems like the heat mats work very well, I think too well for people using paper towels. paper towel just dries up at the bottom too fast. when you use the peat pucks it actually works very well with the heat mat, atleast from my experiences.:blsmoke::blsmoke:

The ONLY method I can suggest for propagating clones or seedlings WITH A 90% SUCCESS RATE is using those Jiffy Pellets. First I setup my propagation chamber. I use a small aquarium and fill it about 2/5th of the way with soil. I moisten the soil thoroughly (not saturated). Then I soak my Jiffy Pellets and let them expand. I then sow the seeds (or put the clones) about an inch deep. Then I cover the aquarium with saran wrap leaving a one inch gap in the middle. I spray the sides of the aquarium tank and the saran wrap to raise the humidity to NO LESS THAN 80%. I have used this method over 10x with a 90% success rate, EVEN WITH BAG SEEDS.
