If you don't have heat problems and don't want to save on electricity, leave it on 24. It's kind of a personal preference.

I would agree that it is a personal choice however, everything that lives grows in their sleep, us, animals, plants, trees eveything that grows when they sleep.

To answer your first question yes, roots like the dark to grow but they should be dark no matter if lights are on or not unless you have a transparent pot or cup???

I do 18/6 no matter hydro or soil for veg and I check them to make sure the leaves are down at night, if they are not there is some type of stress, heat, light leak, bad nute mixture etc. Them sleeping at night is how I determine if the enviorment is correct for them.

Hope this helps.

The grow when they sleep thing is correct but checking on them at night to know they do sleep to me has helped make sure all is well before shit starts to happen.

But I am a single father and very over protective by nature. Make sure at night when you look at them you have nothing but green light bulbs or a green flashlight in there. Dont let light come in and stress them at their night time. The green lights do not affect them at all it means nothing to them. Set you lights day and night timer so "sleep time" is at a time when you are home from work or the in the morning etc. Cool thing I do is this, very cool, my lights come on at 7am so i go in there right before that a few minutes and sit there, watch the light come up and watch the girls wake up. Cool shit.

Are there studies out there that show that 18/6 is better than 15/9, 16/8, 17/7, etc.? After all, not many places have 18 hours of sunlight (I do realize artificial lighting is not the sun).
