Was criminalizing MJ and the targets of MJ ever about stopping it's use or even about reducing harm? Read much about how the Nixon WH used drug laws to target groups for both political gain and to suppress those who opposed him?
From what we know about Trump, he doesn't care any more about the morality or harm reduction of MJ use. But he sure as hell will take whatever actions he can against those who oppose him. What kind of bet would you like to make that enforcement won't include many republican districts or wealthy people or groups of white people that support him?
Sessions is activating a political weapon. Plain and simple. He doesn't need state police to get involved either.

Again, the Federal domain is interstate commerce. The only time the Federal Government can intervene in state affairs is if the state makes a law that is deemed to be unconstitutional.
So long as what a state does is done within the state entirely and does not violate any Constitutional rights, then there is nothing on earth the Federal Government can do about it.

Yeah, but unless the state police were involved in arresting people the feds don't have enough manpower to deal with it. The state police in these states have generally said that they will not violate the will of the people who voted to decriminalize cannabis.
