Sexiest Fridge In The World

Have a old fridge? have some space in your garage? put it to use!

Here is what ive done with a broken fridge and i am quite pleased with the way it has turned out...

For lighting, i chose a 400w MH/HPS setup with lumatek digital ballast.

Over heating is a huge issue with this cab since it is so well insulated, so i paired it with a 4" inline fan with filter to keep temps down.

Typically they are staying between 85-89. Little on the warm side but ill take it for the light intensity this setup brings to the box (which is barely 4 sq ft) so do the math.

Since this fridge needs to be pretty portable and able to grow in most any room with any temp (within reason) i added a greenhouse thermostat on the inside of the box.

I searched for weeks for a digital thermostat that could handle 120v but they arent readily available and converting a 24v to run the fan would have been more trouble than it was worth.

This fridge is all about stealth, so it needed to sound and act like a normal fridge.

my original design was to mount the 4" fan and filter under the fridge where the compressor use to be, a perfect spot for it.

But, inline fans are notoriously loud, so this design was scrapped and instead i built a muffler box for the fan to sit in.

Now there's nothing more than a hum from the fan.

Keeping with stealth, i also had to light proof the entire fridge, which wasnt an easy task since there are +/- 13,000 lumens a sq ft inside.

but all purpose weather stripping did the trick.

Now... on to genetics, i chose to go with barneys farm LSD because ive read it is a resilient strain and hopefully can be kept relatively short.

maximum grow space is 32" from the top of the tub to the bottom of the light.

So ill definitely be topping them when the time comes. :leaf: seeds were germinated on 11/6, so hopefully if i didnt totally fuck up the rockwool (which im new at) i should be seeing some sprouts within the next couple of days.

Ive already put in the MH bulb and have it running regular light cycle for veg.

Any of you think this is too much light on the seeds?

So theres my spill.. here are some pics for you guys. Whatcha think about it?

If any of you see a design flaw, error in judgement, or just a plain mistake, please by all means point it out :bigjoint:

How did I not think of this. I have an extra fridge.
You have a very intelligent mind

Thanks man, its always good to get compliments from fellow growers ;-)

With a little bit of work and some growing equipment you can turn that fridge into a great cab. Hit me up if you have any questions. :leaf:

Hey Bro, nice job! Question: why are you using a "greenhouse thermostat"? Wouldn't you want the fan to run 24/7?

I think the 400W MH may be a little strong for your seedlings. Can you drop in a few 42W CFL's until they're about 10 days old? Then hit them with that 400W MH and watch them grow.

Again, nice job!!

Great job,now I wish that I didn't throw away my old refridge!! If too many people see this there may be a run on ol fridges at the dump !! Now what are those crazy kids doing with all those fridges !?

im using a greenhouse thermostat so this fridge can be set anywhere. like a garage or something of the like. that way, when the temps get down to 40-30F the fan wont be running 24/7 pulling freezing air into the box.

and i could drop some in... thats a good idea if i had some cfls and fixtures laying around.. ill see what i can do. if not, do you think that much light will hurt them? or just perhaps stunt their growth.

Being a FL boy, I forget that ppl grow where it freezes! Do you live near the Trailer Park Boys?

You should be able to pick up some CFL's at your local hdwr store, Lowes, WalFart, etc. You can use them in any light or fixture. Nothing special since it's only for the 1st few days.

I hear that MH is much hotter than HPS, so I don't know how your seedlings will respond.

temps are manageable right now. i checked the temp of the hps and mh before i planted and they were both pretty close to each other. it seems no matter what the temp is outside the box stays about 89-74 degrees. i had some cfls somewhere from my first grow.. maybe ill be able to find them :bigjoint:

here are some more picks of the setup. little more detail to these. they show the back of the fridge with the ballast mounted and the exhaust/intake ports. along with my ghetto muffler box. ;-)

no sprouts yet... im not use to rockwool. how long does it usually take for seeds to sprout in them?

You intake ideally should be 2X the size of your exhaust. So your intake should be 8" with a 4" exhaust. This will allow for proper air exchange and helping to lower those temps.

4 to 6 days for the seeds to show. I now put them into moist paper towels and once the root shows, I'll drop it (root 1st) into the RW. This way I know if the seed is good or bad prior to putting it into the RW.

I love the muffler!!

thanks man, i hope i didnt fuck up with the rockwool lol. and i wouldve went with a bigger intake but the hole in the fridge was already there after all the components were ripped out and i didnt wanna do anymore cutting to the body of the fridge so i wouldnt mess up the insulation inside. you think this could hurt me in the long run? and i did the same thing with the seeds, germed them till a tap root was visible then dropped them in the cubes after i dipped them in ph water. rockwool just seems like more trouble than its worth.. maybe ill grow to like it.

Having a larger intake(you could add another hole instead of increasing the size of the current intake, if that would be easier)really helps to lower the temps in small spaces. Having your temps down around 80 will help the plants too. And if it gets too cool inside during a cold day or night, just block some of the opening.

Hopefully those seedlings will show their heads soon.

Do ya know the difference between a Refrigerator and Richard Simons?

The refrigerator doesn't moan, when you pull the meat out!

You may want to take one RW cube and carefully crack it open. Then look and see what's going on. Is it rotting or is it about to pop?

Damn, I know these seeds weren't cheap either.

Good luck!

well! im pretty positive ive killed some seeds lol. ill get a good look at them tomorrow and that'll be the deciding factor. this will set me back 2 or 3 weeks :cuss: rockwools too fucking complicated lol
