Excellent! Man, I really felt for you. Nothing sucks more than seeing expensive beans go to waste. Hopefully the Devil Wool won't be a problem any more.

Smart idea doing a test prior to the new beans.

Good luck!!

Those coco plugs, any brand, are fucking nice no ph-ing they wick water just like rock wool, they breathe like rw many have beneficial micro flora. I do think they dont dry out as much. The magic beans go gang busters in them once I am out of bag seed and and jiffy pucks i am NEVER going back. Any hydro is going into the coco plugs I got some san marzano tomato seeds that are begging to be put in some ... anyways if you want to 86 the rockwool hassle get some coco plugs.

The biggest problem with the coco plugs is they look like little brownies and when i see them during a sweet fix i think awesome mini brownies, only to remember they are grow plugs.

god i hope i am sober enough to fry a turkey in a couple of hours.

pop them in paper towels. before sticking them in any hydro it really helps eliminate the will they , wont they or have they pop(ped). IMO I think they go quicker when you do that mainly you dont have to worry about if the medium is wet enough for germination but not so wet as to drown the lil seedlings.

ok, so ive gotten rockwool down. ive sprouted several plants in them thus far after moving them to a warmer spot. so thats one problem down...

however, ive ran into another dilemma. With the onset of colder weather, my box is running too cold. the test plant i put into the system was quickly killed off. That night temps got down to 65 with the light off.

So im hit with another speed bump in the process. How am i to keep temperatures at a reasonable level? Ive covered the heat, now i have to over come the cold.

Perhaps a heater running next to the intake wired to the thermostat (its a heating and cooling switch) would do it, but then i would have to run the fan 24/7 and take it off the thermostat. But that would remedy the problem. do you guys have any suggestions? once again i thank everyone for the rw help lol im glad i finally have that down. Seeds should be here within the next week. so maybe ill get this show on the road..

I like your idea about a space heater via the intake. At least you'll get 4 to 5 weeks of 24/7 lights, but that's ends in January, brrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Space heater via intake, nice!!

Have a old fridge? have some space in your garage? put it to use!

Here is what ive done with a broken fridge and i am quite pleased with the way it has turned out...

For lighting, i chose a 400w MH/HPS setup with lumatek digital ballast.

Over heating is a huge issue with this cab since it is so well insulated, so i paired it with a 4" inline fan with filter to keep temps down.

Typically they are staying between 85-89. Little on the warm side but ill take it for the light intensity this setup brings to the box (which is barely 4 sq ft) so do the math.

Since this fridge needs to be pretty portable and able to grow in most any room with any temp (within reason) i added a greenhouse thermostat on the inside of the box.

I searched for weeks for a digital thermostat that could handle 120v but they arent readily available and converting a 24v to run the fan would have been more trouble than it was worth.

This fridge is all about stealth, so it needed to sound and act like a normal fridge.

my original design was to mount the 4" fan and filter under the fridge where the compressor use to be, a perfect spot for it.

But, inline fans are notoriously loud, so this design was scrapped and instead i built a muffler box for the fan to sit in.

Now there's nothing more than a hum from the fan.

Keeping with stealth, i also had to light proof the entire fridge, which wasnt an easy task since there are +/- 13,000 lumens a sq ft inside.

but all purpose weather stripping did the trick.

Now... on to genetics, i chose to go with barneys farm LSD because ive read it is a resilient strain and hopefully can be kept relatively short.

maximum grow space is 32" from the top of the tub to the bottom of the light.

So ill definitely be topping them when the time comes. :leaf: seeds were germinated on 11/6, so hopefully if i didnt totally fuck up the rockwool (which im new at) i should be seeing some sprouts within the next couple of days.

Ive already put in the MH bulb and have it running regular light cycle for veg.

Any of you think this is too much light on the seeds?

So theres my spill.. here are some pics for you guys. Whatcha think about it?

If any of you see a design flaw, error in judgement, or just a plain mistake, please by all means point it out :bigjoint:
WOW WOW!!!i wish i had some where to put a fridge! i have heared of people making these. i would love to make one. they are so cool!! sick shit man!!

nice. I know a guy who has an old coke machine in his garage and he grows in that. He's kind of a pack rat so nobody has ever really said anything about it. It's been there for years. They make great grow cabs

get an under tank reptile heater with a thermostat. Put it on the bottom of the sexy fridge and let it do its job. Avoid space heaters they could catch fire.

 Glad to have some more people following along! maybe in the next couple of days ill have something to show all of you lol. My seed order came in, however i was shorted 2 seeds. I was really impressed with the attitude and how they handled it. No questions asked they resent me another order.

insane-o, you have a good point. space heaters are also prone to failure, e.g.. fire, shortage, burn out.

The reptile tank heater is a really good idea, but would it keep the whole fridge warm enough?

the cab tends to stay about 20~ degrees above the outside temperature when the lights are off. And i dont think it would take a massive amount of heat to keep the super insulated fridge warm at night. So a space heater is over kill.. Ill definitely be looking into these.

On the flip side, my other order should be arriving in a couple of days.. so maybe ill be able to get this show rollin :bigjoint: thanks for all the help guys. I knew i would run into some problems once i got this sucker set up. Just didnt think it would be this many lol

those UTH pads can take up to 6 hours to heat up all the way and you would most likely need to have it on 24/7, which may lead you to problems in over heating during the day... I have the large version for my snake's terrarium.

Ive read up on some reviews and there are alot of mixed opinions. most stating that they dont get very hot.. so i guess thats out.

i need some source of heat to warm up the cab, but it wont take much for it to stay warm (especially when you consider its only dropping 15~20 degrees from daytime temps at night and it being 40 or below outside) so a space heater is definitely overkill.

I like the idea of a heating pad of some sort but i dont know if the uth pad has enough umf to do the job.. any more suggestions? im gonna do some cruisin on the site and see if i can find anything on the matter.. thanks for the help once again.

EDIT: It probably wouldnt hurt having the pad on 24/7, especially since temps will be getting pretty low in the winter here (30 on average). but idk if it puts off enough heat to warm the fridge.

I may wanna think about running a intake from a warmer part of the house. seems like big task for such a problem, but whatever it takes im prepared to do lol

it says on petco's website that these under tank heaters raise the ambient air temp in a terrarium an average of 5 to 10 degrees. I'd say that one of the larger pads would be enough to keep the fridge warm since its so insulated. Terrariums arent usually enclosed and insulated lol. what do you guys think?

Im not so sure about these heaters, i got the smallest one they had for a cloner tupperwear i was using, it drew like 2 watts and didnt really heat shit for anything; and it was 20 dollars. the biggest one they had was like 60-75 dollars and it was probably only 10"x12" so i dont see it heating a whole fridge very well.

nor do i. thats why im giving up on all these products and have decided to just run a intake from warmer part of the house. simple. safe. reliable solution.

dont have to worry about burning anything down and i dont have to worry about heater failure. ill be working on this tomorrow so within the next week the system should be up and running.

Another problem that this would fix is that the temps are unusually low already this year. And if it got too cold the sub freezing air being drawn through the box would kill anything inside. so a intake ran from a warmer spot would remedy this as well. Ill have some more pics for you guys in a few days :weed:

ok so perhaps the solution wasnt as reliable as i thought. i ran a intake under the house from a warmer room. And the temp still sits at 60-63 in the box. ducting is insulated under the house, so im not losing heat there.. so idk where its going or how its so cold but it is. maybe ill get it figured out. seeds arrived as well. so im rollin :-o
