I opened up a new bag of clay pebbles for my hydro set up and ran water through them but it made the water muddy immediately...should I have rinsed the pebbles thoroughly first?

They are supposed to be cleaned off prior to use and in between crops.
Some people use 1/3 bleech and 2/3 hot water

Cut some small drainage holes ina big bbucket, put the rocks in and run water over then until the water runs clear. Reusing them it's easier to let any dead roots on the rocks dry completely, then rinse, the roots will come off much easier.

I always rinse when i hydro. Line a twenty gallon pot with a 15 gallon smart pot and dump em in and drench em a couple times.

If you take a screw driver and poke holes in one side of bag flip over place on grate stuff the garden hose in the top of bag it will rince all dust from shipping that si in the bag. Then rince with PHed water. To reuse after use, We lose about 10% of pebbles in the recycle, they are stuck in the rootball and to get to those there is too much rootmater I fill a 55 gal. drum with pebbles fill with water and add 400 mils. H2 02 let sit overnight everything dies EVERYTHING rince and wash off any remaining root mater.

I just put them in a bucket and mush them against eachother...A few mins later good to go. Id replace the hydroton every 12 months since it is $15 for many lbs of it.
