It depends on how much room you have for each plant. If you top once, you will have 3-4 main shoots instead of one. The plant will be shorter and wider. If you top the 2 tallest shoots again, then you will have a bush, even shorter still.

The tradeoff is quality and size of bud. With more budsites, the buds are smaller, just more of them. Without topping, the main cola will end up being what I like to lovingly call "Mo Better Bud."

In my half ass sog setup I dont top the plant untill I see my frist set of white hairs. Usually a week or so into flowering. But I have lots of plants so no need for more branches. But if I only had 1-2 plant Im sure I would top them and get them as wide as I could so I could fill all my light space up. Im sure i would let them get huge before I budded them. Huge as in wide not tall.

whoa, WM, you top the plant just when she's switching? I guess that puts the growth spurt to the lower branches all right. I've always read to top during veg, and allow a week to recover before putting into flower.

Vic, right now, I'm growing some 3 foot plants, and they have 2 sqft each to grow in. So I top them once, when they are 5-6 inches tall, by removing only the meristem, the tiniest piece of green, the little part between the smallest new leaves. If done well, that will result in a perfect V in the main stem. Several side branches will grow up to become big budders, too.

Thank you both for your answers. I had read cervantes booland he almost says not to top but to bend instead. I ws still setting up my room and learning as i went. I didn't think height was going to be an issue because my ceiling is almost 10' so I just kept moving the taller plants to the outside. Of the 60 or so plants I had 28 turned out to be male so no problem jsut got rid of them. By that time I had plants that were 5' tall on tables 2' high and you do need at least 1' for your light. oH AND DID i MENTION THE LIGHT HAS TO HANG DOWN AT LEAST A FEW INCHES. I am a little over 8 weeks into flowering. I have 18 that are getting cloudy trics and 11 that aren't cloudy yet. Some of those 11 are over 6' tall plants. Wish I would have topped them? But I am learning.
