Negotiation with children who want control is a much better tool for managing them, this takes the power-struggle aspect out of the equation.
in my opinion a power struggle shouldnt exist. my upbringing taught me to respect my elders or be slapped or spanked. i grew up fine. a power struggle in my opinion shows a lack of respect for the parent or parents involved. a good whoopen will make that struggle disappear completely. granted if you treat the kid like shit all of the time of course he or she will eventually fight the system which is a different story all together...

This thread is great! I have been whipped with the hot wheels track, but never by my parents, just cousins and friends. My dad used a belt if I really needed it. Now I'm an adult, and a father. My son will always know I love him more than anything in the world, I would literally kill for him if necessary. He also will always know that if he steps over that line, he's gonna get swatted on his ass. It's going to hurt. I don't like it any more than he does, but my job is to raise a young man. I don't think anyone here is condoning child abuse, but if you think that a good old fashioned spanking is child abuse then chances are you're raising a kid who isn't going to understand consequences.

Here we go again...Can someone shut this thread down please?
for what? i smacked him in the mouth for telling me "fuck you im not going to do it." it being taking out the trash. hes 9. we dont encourage beating kids in my household but sometimes if they step over the line they need to be reminded its there. besides he knows better and it wasnt hard. just a little love tap. not even red. ust enough to hurt his pride and set him straight. i went and talked to him afterwards. hes fine. playing ps3 as we speak.

That is just ignorant. Kids constantly test the boundries. Some kids are discouraged enough with timeouts and groundings. Other kids will keep on going.

A spanking is not a beating. People need to realize that spanking is in no way abusive to the child. It is a final resort that can stop the child from engaging in risky/dangerous behavior.
nothing wrong with spanking a kid, but hitting a kid? I believe that is what OP was asking?

In this day and age, no.. they have more power than the parents in terms of "spank me and you go to jail" and they also tote guns.

Times changed, ^ this pretty much sums up the entire thread.

You are not allowed to hit your kids anymore, period.

I wanted to spank my two boys years ago and my wife did the unthinkable and said "don't do it" in front of them. Its been downhill from that day on. It was not an anger spank but a lesson to learn spank.
