Siksika First Nation hopes to grow medical marijuana

The Siksika First Nation has announced plans to get into the medical marijuana business.

The band, located east of Calgary, has found a business partner in the LDI Group and applied to Health Canada for a licence to grow pharmaceutical-grade marijuana.

Because the Siksika First Nation is an agricultural-based community, medical marijuana made sense, said Shane Breaker, a manager with Siksika Resource Development.

"We've been growing crops and ranching out there for over 100 years, and we felt that it's just great synergy to get into medical marijuana because we're able to grow, and we have land to do it."

If the licence is approved, the partnership, called Siksika Herbz Ltd., hopes to have an $8.2-million facility in an industrial park running by 2018, Breaker said.

"We're putting a lot of money behind our facility, which is a 25,000-square-foot facility, which will be ample for a grow operation and employ local members from the Siksika to operate the operation."

They hope to produce $14.4 million in annual revenue from dried cannabis through the venture.

Give it to them they deserve it.

If they just found a business partner??...idk...maybe it's the way I read it...on a re read they talk about growing crops and ranching then state they have a facility in an industrial park...that made me chuckle...

Absolutely not! After the atrocities that this country has done to the indigenous people, they should be fast-fracked thru the process...IMO! AND I hope they crush the other LP's!

Me too....ranch land to spare....evoking a picture of vast fields of mmj grown free range....
and then an industrial park....evoking a picture of ....urban graffiti scribbled by a crafted hand.. onto the side wall of a building....in an alley....
I too think the first nations deserve to be fast tracked thru a process that is exceedingly difficult
on purpose...

i hope they do it with patients in mind and show the others how it's done.
give good clean safe product for a good price and watch people line up
